Pulled chest muscle?

Subject: Pulled chest muscle?

I feel like I strained my chest muscle. I asked my instructor if this is common, and she said that this happens sometimes in deep backbends. I feel a raised bump on my chest bone (not my breast), which has been there for quite a while. I have been practicing 3x's a week since the beginning of this year, which seems to coincide with when I noticed this bump. I went to the doctor for my yearly checkup, and she said that it could be a strained muscle (she didn't seem too concerned ). Has anyone else experienced this? It doesn't hurt unless I push on it.

Hi Gracie,

I've strained chest muscles in backbends, but over by the shoulder...
Specifically (based on my limited understanding of anatomy), the
pectoralis minor near its attachment to the humerus. This came from
reaching over the shoulder in backbends (e.g., to grab the foot).
I found that the solution for me was to ground the humerus more
fully into its socket when doing these grips (I'm indebted to my
Iyengar teacher for this insight). Contract the rotator cuff muscles
to seat the bone more fully, an action that you can feel in the armpit
when the arm is raised overhead. For me, this movesthe back bending
out of the shoulder joints and back to the spine (where it belongs).
