yoga?

I'm just curious as to how many people on this board do yoga exclusively. For the past week or so I've been doing only yoga, and have let my weight training slide. I'm not sure I want to go back to it. I don't enjoy it. I've tried pilates, but get bored with it quickly. Same with the Lotte Berk Method. I do still run, but won't be doing that too much until it gets warm again Is there anyone who thinks that yoga by itself is a sufficient form of exercise, or anyone who thinks it lacks in certain aspects? My instinct would be to say that it is lacking in the cardio department, but maybe a fast paced power yoga or astanga session? Any opinions on this?
Samantha

I do ashtanga. Since I'm pretty seditary, it's a huge improvement over what I used to do. I've also taken some yogalates classes, which I enjoy, but it's not yoga. I started taking them to help with core work, to step outside my comfort zone, and for a change of pace from yoga.

I strength train, hike, and run. I also play tennis once a week, swim in the warmer months, and kayak whenever I have time. The only things I schedule as "workouts" are weights and yoga, though. Everything else just happens when it happens.

Dear Samantha:

If your question is: What I do for fitness other than Yoga?, the answer is: a) Mainly Yoga, b) some walking, c) little bit biking d) medium climbing steps, hills, etc. e) Good amount of rest f) high quality food and water. g) getting rid of unwanted stuff, such as cooking, paperwork, etc.

If your question is : Is Yoga sufficient for the fitness for myself? Answer is : More than sufficient.

If your question is: Can you get more Cardio benefit from NON Yoga Exercise, Answer is: Absolutely. But, I do not want it.

I know a lot of people who JUST do yoga and swear it is all they need.

Personally, I also do Pilates, step aerobics, "toning" classes, walking/running, and soon to begin spinning classes. But, I have to! It's my job!

I used to run and do weight training. Once I started power yoga, I got less interested in the weight training, and there is only so much time in the day, so I don't do much weight training anymore. Every few months I do a couple weight workouts and discover that I am a little stronger than before (as measured by weight-lifting ability) so I figure the yoga is working I don't run anymore either -- got shin splints & couldn't get rid of 'em -- so now I walk, with my dogs.

It's a heavy-duty fast-paced cycling class, done on specially designed stationary bikes. I haven't tried it yet, I hear it's an awesome cardio workout! My classes start the 2nd week in January, I'll let ya know how it goes!

I've been training in martial arts for five years. My yoga is only a few months along. I've noticed that one helps the other and vice versa. The martial arts is a lot of self defense training along with other aspects. I enjoy both!

Yeah, I used to do Aikido/Hapkido for a while, but my last teacher gave me a bad case of karatitis. (The need to punch and kick, particularly inches away from non-karate people's faces). While I really enjoyed it, it didn't relax me anywhere near as well as yoga does.

I have been thinking about taking some more classes, but haven't gotten around to it yet. Sometimes I get a little bored with yoga, so I'm tempted to go wandering off, but I haven't yet.

There's so many different styles of martial arts out there, maybe you can find one to suit your tastes? I know, I enjoy the martial arts because I do need to "let off steam" and punch and kick a target - its helps a great deal after a bad day at work. Plus my classmates are terrific people with good control.

Then going to yoga class to just "empty out" and relax....ahhhh...... I tell ya, if I could do yoga as often as karate, I'd be the walking talking human version of prozac or valium - LOLLL!!

I run, walk, jump rope, play with Tae Bo DVDs, just started weight training 2 months ago...I do all kinds of stuff to keep it interesting. And I'm a Krav Maga student, which really kicks my butt.

If Yoga has taught me anything, it's balance. I like to engage in many different things and try not to overdo any of them.

The karatitis thing is a general malady of bad martial artists, not of any particular style, just like there are some maladys of yogis, though I'm drawing a blank on some ATM. There's a local Aikido studio that I've tried to join twice, but fate keeps intervening. (Maybe a malady of yogis is leaving things up to fate? )

Doh! Yeah, I've been attempting to suppress that with yogi, but it doesn't seem to be working. Maybe this is just human nature, we spend a lot of time on something, and then want to show off!

i think i answered this one already around here somewhere. . .

i like to lift weights 1-2 times per week. rock climb 2 x per week. swim when i can. walk daily (about 3 miles or so, sometimes 5).

i'm more of a 'hobbiest' about these things because i don't get to do them as often as i would like, seeing as i'm busy: hiking, bird watching (which i do whenever i can of course, like when i'm driving i like to go "hawk! hawk!" and what not as i see things--even if no one else is with me in the car), canoeing (hey, twice a year ain't bad!), rock climbing out doors (maybe twice a year), more swimming, particularly in open waters (lakes, streams, natural springs, oceans, bays, you get the idea).

yeah, that's pretty much me.

oh yeah, i average about 2 hrs of yoga a day. not always 100% asana.

I do the elliptical at the gym for 35 minutes 4 times a week. I won't this week due to Easter, so I plan on doing yoga on my own that day. I am for 3 miles in cardio each workout or more. This can mean a fourth mile warm up and cool down on the treadmill walking too. I also plan to start swimming on an off day of yoga and ellipticals. My other workout is walking. I don't try to get the closest spot to park at school or the store unless its night time. I see no point in doing that when its a few more feet that can benefit my health too. I may also start swimming on one of the days I do elliptical. On one day, I'm doing the yoga class I joined which I think is Asana plus ellpticals at night.

In addition to yoga, I swim and run. All of them do unique things for my body and my body type needs a range of exercises, particulary the low-impact swimming. For social/fun things, I occasionally play tennis and rock climb (my husband likes the latter :-) ).

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I got into yoga mostly to help my karate, which I practice as much as possible (3 classes a week plus solo practice when I can squeeze it in) However, as of late, my yoga practice is starting to take a life of its own, becoming something I look forward to doing for its own sake and not just for the cross-training benefits. I still am most passionate about my karate practice, but a yoga class represents a nice change of pace for me on what would otherwise be an "off day."
I also hit the gym for strength training and cardio 2x per week.

i do my one hour of hatha probably 6 times a week, but do some sort of yoga everyday-all day long.

i work in my garden, which is large. I have no rototiller so everything i do in the garden i do it with a shovel, and that is very hard work, but worth it when the strawberries come.

i watch my diet, although i do reward myself with food, from time to time---food is just so rewarding

I used to lift weights religiously
I used to be a very competitive wrestler
I used to ride my bike

Now, I work all day, commute a long distance, invest what time i can in my family (wife-4 kids), and am very content to sit at the end of the day, which normally doesn't arrive until way past sunset.

Ahhhhhhhhh different seasons, YES

Yoga 7 days a week, average 2-3 hours per day. Pilates 2 times a week, treadmill randomly 2 times a week. Swimming, usually everyday but the pool is still cold right now.
I did swim the other day. It has been warm and sticky in NY

Oh, I forgot to add my dancing but I don't consider that a workout. it's a 20 minute warm-up for the Pilates classes I teach

I also train three times a week in Thai-boxing. I think Yoga and Thai boxing go really well together as Yoga has helped me become more calm, flexible and stronger, which has really improved my Thai-boxing.
Although Yoga alone would not get me fighting fit, I think that it is a sufficient form of excercise to keep people generally fit and healthy. If I want to really challenge myself then Astanga really does work up a sweat and is a great workout.

I don't do a great deal.

I ran for over 15 years competitively for 10 and had to stop because of knee injuries.

I skated for 5 odd years (vert blading) and had 2 bad falls which crushed my neck, so that was the end of that, didn't fancy being in a wheel chair.

Downhill mountain biking saw me have some falls as well which told me to back off.

I have sky dived and will probably go and do that again. I run once a week very carefully and not too far or too fast. I do free-dive for a few weeks a year.

Ashtanga and the odd iyengar class is what keeps me well and happy.

I'd love to go back to some of the things I used to do, but hey, you've got to listen to your body and your common sense

well, when I win the fitness struggle I
do power Yoga 5- 6times a week
run 3-4 times a week
weight train 2 times/week
karate 2 times/week
swim 1 time/week
and add in a miscellaneous workout - one of my choice on the day to allow for some variety - it may be a walk, a Tae Bo video, step aerobics, boot camp workout or whatever....
I work shift so the Yoga and running fit in easily every day more or less and then over my days off I add in a third workout. The misc. one is cool cos it's great to be able to break from the routine and challenge myself to do something different which makes it more fun...

other than that I like to boulder, surf, ski & snorkel seasonally or socially

My yoga practice is plenty. I do primarily kundalini, and once a week I'll do an Ashtanga practice. I used to do Ashtanga exclusively, but it was too much for me; I got injured too often. I feel that the breathing practices in kundalini and Ashtanga have built my aerobic capacity and the asanas in kundalini and Ashtanga definitely have increased my strength and flexibility.

Also, I don't drive, so I walk a lot, and I enjoy recreational bike riding.

I used to run, and do "aerobics", but no longer do either. My knees will not allow it.

I run about 30 miles totalĀ a week (6 days a week).

I do light weights at lunch 4 days a week.

I do Ashtanga every day but Saturday. Some days are less intense then others, though.

I think you need to do some form of walking in addition to yoga to maintain your heart's health...but that could be me just reiterating what the "experts" say a body needs.

I am wondering, does anyone have experience with trekking poles? I am attmpting to walk everyday, am heavy and thought that besides making walking a more upper/ lower body workout, the poles would help with stress on my knees and ankles. What I don't want to happen with my walking is that my knees get sore, it hurts to walk, making it harder/ less likely that I will walk the next day... little issues arise in my mind, like how to walk the dog while using the poles, if carbon tips will be appropriate for walking on pavement (I am thinking of black diamond poles, I want to get good ones so the poles will be comfortable and can handle my weight, even tho I am not mountainering, the poles need to be strong... and also parts of my walk are done on grass/ trail type ground) Thanks for the input!

Poles do make walking much easier. Mr. Tourist has used them in adventure races and found them very helpful. Ifyou have a good outdoor store around they can direct you to the best poles. They have poles that are for racing (usually telescopic so they fold up to take less space) and "nordic walking" poles - both intended for use while walking. Sounds like fun but I have no hints about what to do with the dog - sorry! Tie the leash to your belt?

My daughters and I saw a leash like that on TV, you attach it around your waist. We were laughing so hard at the thought that we would try it out with our dog. We were all in agreement on this topic, knowing for sure that injury would follow. Our dog is notoriously hard headed.

Distance walking (though a piriformis injury has made me cut back drastically for the past 6 months), cycling (when I can't walk), weights (perhaps 1-2 times per week) and swimming (3-5 times per week, depending on the time of year).

In fact, I first went to yoga to get help with my core (I would stoop over toward the end of long walks) and for my tight hamstrings.

I wanted to offer this to some of you that is really in to Yoga instead of sellign it to someone who wont enjoy it as some of you will.

I have a Yoga site for sale for $60 bucks. except payments through Paypal.

http://www.yogapilatesfitness.net

Its a beautiful website and for some one interested in yoga it would great to have. I just dont have the time nor the interest in Yoga to market the site.

Its fully automated with Articles and videos updated daily.

3 streams of income, adsense, Ebay, and Amazon.

Let me know we can work something out.

Hello newbie....I've traditionally been a body-weight exerciser, but I take advantage of my workplace gym and pool during lunch. I also LOVE my suspension trainer......

I do yoga in between the other training days....so 3 days some kind of exercise other than yoga, and three days yoga, one day of just vegging..
