Subject: frustrated by inability

Hi,

I have been practising yoga on and off for a couple of years. However, every time I take a class I am so frustrated by how unflexible I am. I am young and in shape so I don't understand. It has gotten to the point where the last class I took was so upsetting and difficult for me that I was not able to enjoy it. Also my hands sweat so much, they are sliding on my mat.

If anyone has any advice I would love to hear it. I really love yoga and would like to become better. Thanks.

I too have been doing yoga for a couple of years and am not very flexible. It takes a long time - be very patient.

I recommend you keep doing yoga 2-3 times per week and concentrate on the form and your breathing and don't worry about your flexibility - it will come with time. I also recommend you commit yourself to 15 mins. of flexibility excercises per day. There is a video with a dynamic series of stretching I highly recommend -

As far as your hands sweating - that happens to me too. Just breath deeply and try to work more softly, not harder and breath. Also, try bringing in a small hand towel so you can periodically wipe your hands off.

Good luck,

Namaste, Toby

Dear Jones,

Let go of your attachment to getting somewhere in the poses. Yoga is not about "attaining" anything. The more you push yourself to become flexible the more you will suffer.

Let go of your goal of becoming more flexible and learn to be in the pose with your breath slow and deep and your mind drawn deeply inside. Learn to find the love and joy in the postures and forget how inflexible you are. It doesn't matter. Everyone is feeling the same thing no matter how advanced in the pose they are at.

And if you are pushing and pulling yourself into the poses to get more flexible then you are tensing and contracting your muscles, which shortens the muscles. Work on relaxing into the poses and letting the muscles lengthen.

Namaste,
Timothy
