| My greatest weakness and biggest frustration in my yoga practice is balance. I fall and fall and fall attempting to do the tree pose, eagle pose, airplane pose, etc.
Is it enough to continue to attempt these poses such that I will eventually get better? Or are there other poses or excercises I can do to work up to being able to do those poses well?

| Hi Toby,
Staying in the balancing poses requires practice and focus. Here are a few tips that might make things a bit easier for you:
1. Practice on a hard surface. A yoga mat or carpet under your feet will create instability with the standing leg and foot.
2. Use a drishti. Stare at one point on the floor with as much intensity as possible. Try not to even blink or think. There will be a natural tendency to break your drishti as you fall out of the pose to look to where you are falling to. Try and resist this and it can prevent you from falling out.
3. Have the arms out to the sides for more stability.
4. Stand next to a wall and lightly touch the wall for support and to keep you from falling completely out of the pose.
5. Practice, practice, practice! Practice simple balancing poses (BTW there is a whole list of them on my website - YogaBasics.com) as much as you can. Start with an easy pose, master it and move to a more challenging one.
6. There may be something out of balance with the bigger aspect of your life. If your life is out of balance than it will be hard to find balance in a yoga pose.
Namaste,
Timothy.

| I´m agree with Timothy.
In my opinion and in my experience the keys for balance are the followings:
1.- Focus (in a imaginary point front to you)
2.- Breathing
3.- Practice. Also, when you are in your regulary activitives. I mean, for example, when you´re working or something like that.
4.- Life balance. Certanly, when I´m nervous or out of control I can´t do asanas very well.
And, let yourself take your time...
Regards,
