So can an overweight or obese person benefit from and perform yoga well? What if there aren't any classes in the area?

Miss Sarah,

Most definitely, people of all shapes, sizes and ages can benefit from the yoga postures. It does however take some time, persistence, patience and sweat.
I tell my students that if it was easy it wouldn't be fun....... Granted most postures may be difficult at first or for some time but that is ok. If anyone were to tell you they could bang out postures thier first time would be quite frankly a liar.
I would like to add that most changes that occur are subtle. But with consistent effort changes will occur, that I will stake any amount of money on. (and i'm not the betting kinda person)
As for classes or studios you may have to travel once a week or monthly to a studio a little ways away and to compliment the studio time use a DVD or a book.
My very first book was "Power Yoga" by Beryl Bender Birch..............I liked it and went on to watching Inhale on the Oxygen channel at 6amEST. From there I went to a studio occasionally here and there, practiced on my own when I could and eventually the principals I learned through my YOGA practice became a way of life.
I wish you success with your practice........always feel welcome to come here and ask questions or when your motivation is down....... we'll all help you.

Om Shanti,
Ravi

Sarah:
Correct Yoga works with mind, which is more powerful than body, and can change the body. It is the body which can be obese, not mind. So, Yoga has to work with any person. An obsese person should do Yoga so that mind can turn the body into an unobsese body.

If there are no classes near you, you must go near to classes.

Peace
