...well...

pilates is just alot of yoga....if you look at alot of the pilates moves you will see they were borrowed from yoga...

yoga is the ANCIENT and time tested practice....

Do your own research, and find out what works best for you.

yoga is better for the well being of your entire mind and body. according to me at least...
pilates will develop a lot of core strength and lean muscles, but it won't develop the mind/body connection like yoga will.
both of them are good for looking sexy and rehabing injuries.

on a side note, do you mean love street like the old soft-core porno series that used to be on cinemax?
just wondering...

My experience with Yoga & Pilates would recomend that for weight loss, just pick up the pace. either one will do the job for fitness. Move at a steady pace, WITH THE BREATH, and use the tools of the practices! Use your Bandhas/Powerhouse - keep the heat up! Also remember, for weight loss, you must consume less calories than you expend in a day.

I think they are both great and compliment one another. I do believe that pilates immediately builds strength in the core (well not just a couple of classes)
I do believe that Joseph Pilates was influenced by Yoga. No doubt! He just put a spin on it and adjusted his movements with a machine he designed, hence naming the workout after himself. Very similar to what happens with all things in life...branding.

For the Yoga/Pilates instructors here, has anyone tried Ajna (Breath of Fire) with Pilates movement? My students love the intensity. Just sharing.

Happy Easter all!!!!

Yup, local studio offers it. They just mix pilates and yoga together. Couldn't really point you any place, sorry.

after I made the post it occurred to me to check it out online. I was amazed at how much is out there. I've noticed similarities between ballet barr work, yoga and pilates but never dreamed anyone would name a class/style yogilaties. Interesting. Thank you being nice about my ignorance. Appreciate it.

I'm using mat pilates to aid in weight loss because of a severe leg injury (car accident). I am losing weight by calorie counting and the pilates for toning. I do miss walking and yoga though. I've found my leg just will not support me while doing yoga. There are even a few moves in pilates that I can no longer perform. Perhaps it will get better. Just remember to stick with it and you are changing more than your waist line you are also changing your life.

=== Dear W: The main difference is all of them and Yoga is: Yoga is meant for spiritual growth as the end. To put it in a different way:

When one does all other things which look like Yoga or do not look like yoga exercise, but have spiritual end in mind, they are doing Yoga. And, when they do actual Yoga Exercise without spiritual end in min (for example, Fitness Gym , Pilates, etc.), they are NOT doing Yoga.

the Feldenkrais Training Method has arrived.

This thread reminds me of some junk mail I got yesterday. It's called just what I said above. From what I can gather all this method is, is another type of Yoga, this time with a twist. Get this...Tuition is $4,250 PER YEAR, for 4 years!!! The good news is they have scholarships for Dhanurasana and take Visa and Mastercard. Should I say move over Bikram too???

Not better or worse than yoga, just different. Though from my experience, there is quite a bit of overlap between the two as physical fitness disciplines (yoga is often thought of as far more than just physical, but that's beyond the scope of a side-by-side comparision here)
In most of the pilates classes I've taken (I've been doing pilates for about 5 months) the focus is more on toning than stretching. Sure you do exercises that augment your flexibility and a few stretches are in the class, especially at the end as a cool down, but it isn't like yoga where almost everything you do has a flexibility component. I also notice that my yoga classes seem to utilize my upper body far more than pilates does, with all the plank poses, downward dogs, crow poses and inversions. In pilates, I spend about 2 minutes at most on all fours, whereas in some yoga classes I might be on my hands at least half the class.

Hi kulkarnn-

I agree that doing yoga (or anything) without spititual presence is not yoga. And about the other side of it; when I am working out at the gym and I am spiritually present, I am doing yoga. Or I am doing yoga while washing the dishes, or while the boss is telling me to shape up! Is that what you were saying?

So, lovestreet70, if you start with yoga, and start to feel that connectedness (you might already do) then anything else you do (Pilates, etc) can be your spiritual practice as well.

From my experience I feel way more relaxed from Yoga than pilates, but Pilates generally gives me a much more physical workout. I find rotating Yoga and pilates between days works well for me, but I agree with tekki there is not a better just different.

Why not both? I enjoy doing and teaching both. I have added a class in my studio that combines both. I bill it as YOGA/Pilates and mix them both together.
