| Hi , I have a question regarding calories burnt in the class. I read the bikram site that mentioned > 400 calories per class. Is this true ? Has anyone measured directly or indirectly the amount burnt ?
Thanks |

| A person doing strenuous exercise puts out something like
300 to 600 watts, depending on their size and how hard they are
working. So at, say, 400 watts for 1.5 hours, you burn about 500 Calories.
(that's dietary Calories, equal to 1000 thermochemical calories).
Like this: (400W x 1.5 h x 3600 sec/hr)/(4186 W/Calorie) = 516 Calories
But I'm not sure that Bikram is really that strenuous, since the heat
makes it feel like heavier exercise that it actually is. |

| Thank you, that's a lot of number crunching and scientific stuff. |

| Without any offense, to think of Calories and all such is not needed. When you do exercise of any kind, you are supposed to do within your limits or exceed a little bit. When you grow strength, the exercise should grow, if you wish to grow strength further, Otherwise just stay where you are.

| this op is pretty old, but if anyone is interested- just for fun I wore my heart-rate monitor that I have for running in class- I burned 500 calories.
It was also interesting to see the heart-rate- it does go up steadily and gradually thru each pose in the standing series, peaking in standing bow pose at 165. The monitor said my heart had been in range (between 120-180) for all but 10 minutes of class. |

| Please do not get offended by my benign joke. I thought you will earn calories in Hot environment. I am glad that you burned so many. Now, others are feeling Hot.!!!!

thank you so much. I can quote this to friends who worry that bikram is not cardio enough.
Give me a break..... I tell them to do it a few times and then talk to me. So far I've had no takers. |

| I don't believe cardio is directly correlated to caloric expenditure.
I believe it is tied to target heart rate maintained over time.
You would need to know if you were at 60-80% of your target heart rate for more than 20 minutes. That would require a haert rate meter during class and it would vary from person to person.

| I have worn a heart monitor to class. It was similar in results to my jazzercise class. I peaked at 145 after the triangle. I maintained above 120 for most of the class. Its been years, I can't remember the details. I think I will try again and report more accurately. |

Location: Somewhere in the Mountains of Western NC | When I first started doing Bikram I used to swear I burned over a 1,000 calories every class. It sure as hell felt like it and it showed with how much weight I lost in the beginning too. I don't even want to think about my heart rate at that time, |
