Subject: Triangle Pose


I have very tense hips (but very flexible)and old injuries in the groin & hamstring. Can anyone help me with attaining a better posture in the triangle pose? I feel my weakness is that I am flexible but have no strength to support myself. Thanks!

Have you tried using a block?  It might help you to feel a little more stable in the pose while you build your strength.

Here's a nice modification for ya BG, ever try using a water bottle for a block?? If you get one of those really thick ones - 2-3" diameter, you can turn it on its side...if not, you'll just have to wing it straight up and that could be potentially dangerous...you might loose all your water, Oh well...

try having your feet closer together, and moving into the posture slowly

I revisit many injuries during my routine and by moving into a posture slowly it allows my joints to open up, and sometimes they pop! open, but I move slowly and they release

trikonasana (sp!?) is a fabulous posture, and has many variations

I've tried it like Iyengar recommends but found that Swami Vishnu-devananda has a technique that is more appealing to my body, David Swenson shows how to do it sorta inbetween Iyengar and Swami Vishnu-devananda, in 'The Complete Book of Yoga' by Hewitt many variations of trikonasana are illustrated. Try different modifications of the posture to see what works best for your body type.

Hopefully I won't be considered a style heretic, but if one style works for one posture and another for the next posture, who is to say that those two styles can't work for you in the same routine?

Just as long as you don't hurt yourself, and you get some benefit from the posture, I believe that the practice is worth while.

Thanks! Shivananda yoga is my favorite technique and that was exactly what I was going to do...I just hope the teacher understands...sometimes they are a little purist in their ways but mostly I think they will understand...Thanks again!

I'm no expert, but my impression of yoga practice (and life in general) is that it is a very, very subjective experience and what works for you is different than what works for others

As long as you gain some benefit from your practice, that is good.

You can practice yoga for the rest of your natural existence, so no one needs to be in a hurry to accomplish anything.

Experience each and every breath, every posture and position

Hi Ms. P, I have gone through many different perceptions on this posture and this is how I do it now. Get your balance and weight through the bent leg foot. Activate the muscles aroung the straight leg femur bone. Lean through the lunging foot as you use the arm against the knee twisting the body around the central axis. Be gentle with the neck so your sense of space is open and flow so you can breath.

This posture is hard if you try to HOLD yourself up. Try to flow so you can breathe. Let gravity move through you as you expand.

Hello -- I have a lot of trouble with Trikinasana. I made it through both sets today, and with not entirely terrible form. I was doing it pretty well, but then one of the teachers said I wasn't stepping out far enough, which was true -- I was probably not much over 3 feet. But when I step all the way out to 4, I can't get my thigh bicep parallel to the floor very well, and when I put the opposite arm up in the air it like points forward about 20 degrees.

The same thing is happening with separate leg forehead to knee.
