Subject: How much do you make?

I'm in the midst of getting a new teaching job. I love the center, and it's 2 mintues from my house as opposed to 30 minutes. I'm a little concerned about the pay though. She pays by the hour. She pays $10 if you have 1-4 students, and $20 for 5 or more students. She just opened, and says she'll increase the pay once she has a bigger clientele base. I'm cool with that, but I just want to know what others are making, so I can decide if this is good for me, or if I need to negotiate when the time comes.

The other studio offered $25 a class, and the gym pays $18 a class with free gym membership. I live in Nebraska. Is this about what others are getting paid?

Thanks,
Carole

I make $20 at one gym and $30 at the other one. When I move into the "mind body studio" at the $30 gym, the members will pay more for that room. It's meant to mimic a studio environment. When I teach in that room, it will be $25 plus $1 per head. There is a 15 person max in that room, so the most I can make is $40. I will still also teach in the $30 room which is an aerobics room and holds about 40 people. Confused?

I'm here in NYC and we get paid a lot more than that usually. Some places give you a base of $15 - $25 plus $3 per head after 3 or 5 students. Gyms pay hourly between $40 and $65. I know some teachers that get even more and some that work for less, but those are the averages.

NYC can support higher pay rates because we have more people that are willing to pay more. I don't know what's happening in Nebraska and what the market will support. I would ask the aerobics instructors what they are getting paid at the gyms and ask around locally to some other yoga teachers.

If you love teaching, you'll get out there and teach build up some clients and gradually increase your price. Look to get more private students and make your money that way.

I live in the Philly environs (extended suburbs). In studios, i earn anywhere from $35 to $80 depending upon how established the studio is. In gyms, i earn anywhere from $15 to $45 depending upon what I was able to negotiate. For private lessons, i earn from $75 to $120 depending upon travel time.

The studios I teach at have a flat rate based on certification level so those teahcing small specialty classes are not penalized due to the numbers and there is no comptetition for students. We make $36 per hour at my level.

Ahhhh, the pay
OK, at the Bally's I work, I make $35 per class and $1 a head for a class size that surpasses 10 students, which is easy since the studio holds 40.
Preschools, I charge $75 for 30-45 minutes depending on age of children.
My self-promoted gigs (where I pay rent) I make between $100-$160 a class depending on how many enroll.
All my other classes vary between $35-$65 an hour. Pay is good, no doubt about that but my work doesn't end as soon as I leave the studio. I take my work home involving many more hours spent on format, music, computer, travel, phone calls, etc.....

Hi Mish,

What kind of self promoted gigs do you do and how do you promote them? Are they basically your regular students going to a special workshop?

I had one location that I taught in but they didn't treat us very nicely. I located a new place .(that I love) It is so perfect. It is a restored 1700's home with parlor, boardroom, etc. They are so nice there. There are two other instructors that teach there too. I have control of the heat (which is important for the senior population), nice rustic wood floors, dimming lights, vaulted ceilings, Chairs, etc.... It's perfect. I rent the space for a very reasonable fee, per student basis.
I had the class I was working with move with me. Started off with 24 students and 17 moved with me. I took a small break between the move to give me time to advertise and promote. I was teaching one class (gentle yoga) but now I teach two classes (one gentle and another flow). Soon I will be opening up a thrid class ( another gentle) as there is not enough room in one of the classes to take in any more students.
I love the place and love the women. They are such a classy bunch of gals, sassy too.

I'm hoping to branch out with more classes that I self promote. I like being my own boss

like mish, i have an indy gig. i teach at a local quaker meeting. it's settled between three large corporations. I advertise through these corporation's wellness programs. The class is 45 minutes long over the lunch hour once a week. The cost of rent per class is $15. I can teach 10 students, and i charge $10 per class. I'm completely booked out, so i earn $85.

I could earn more if i taught more people, but i don't like classes larger than 15. I prefer 5-10 students. 15 is ok. But, i like to give a lot of individual attention and assists, and keep the classes intimate. This is just a personal thing. I've taught classes of over 150 students before. I just didn't like it. I couldn't help people enough, and didn't feel like i was really teaching. I might as well have put my voice over an audio system, and left the room, for all most of the students knew--you know? I like small classes.

Just a thought -

I work at a very busy chiropractic office and I pass out postcard size "flyers" of a particular yoga studio that has the schdeule printed on one side and location and pretty things on the other side.

My gynecologist offers yoga at her office in the evening. The doc doesn't teach, a yoga instructor teaches.

Anyway, perhaps there's some progressive health professionals in your neck of the woods that can help market you and your classes.

Fifi- Girl, you're full of great ideas! Thanks! I have already passed out some flyers at OB offices and maternity stores for my pre-natal classes, but you had some other great ideas.

Namaste, All-

In Minnesota, I teach my own independant classes. In an average class I have seven students paying $70.00 for an eight-week session, so minus rent of the space ($20.00 per hour) I make $330 per seven-student 8-week class. I like running my own gigs very much! I've also subbed for community education and made $30.00 per class of about 15 students, and I've subbed for a private studio teacher and made $40.00 per class of 8-10 students.

I agree with trying to get the word out through your doctor/chiropractor offices...massage therapists and bodywork professionals in your region are another valuable resource. Be creative. Offer a free class in a park on a saturday and see who comes! Use as many ways as possible to expose people to the joy of yoga.

Blessings to all!
