Subject: Unusual Bikram Instructor

Last Monday I went to a Bikram class at the request of another yoga teacher. I've taken Bikram before and liked the exercises, but not the script. One of the real complaints I have is that I'm a dominately visual learner. The fact that the instructors give instructions, but don't show how to do the poses is frustrating. They don't always do them the way I do in my Astanga classes.

Well this instructor not only gives the spiel, but he gets down and demonstrates the poses as the same time. The first class he did it the entire class. What a huge help. The other classes he's done it on some, but not all poses.

What a refreshing change.

in my bikram class the vast majority of the students are regulars.
you don't need a demonstration from the teacher as every class has 20 students that have been 100 times. Look around the room if you need to see a demonstration. Half of our students are better than the teachers.

Well maybe it's the time I go, but the vast majority are beginners like I am so it does little good. Coming from Ashtanga as my primary practice, the training is definitely NOT to look around, so I appreciate what he does.

He said that it took him over 3 years to learn how to do it. He said that it's not a matter of wont, but can't. With the extra heat it's hard to model and instruct.
