Subject: Mat sanitation

I was wondering what you guys do to clean your yoga mats. I hose mine down once every couple of weeks. I also hang it out to dry everyday when I get back from yoga. Should I be doing more? My mat doesn't stink (smells like rubber) but with all the paranoia out there about bacteria sometimes I feel maybe I should be doing more.
I also use one of those yogitoes towels over my mat. I also go to Bikram classes almost every day. (I have missed a total 9 classes in the past 3 months. My current record is 28 days straight.)

We use tea tree oil on all the mats at my studio. If you get the real, concentrated stuff you hardly need any. We have a large spray bottle that's filled with just water and 5-10 drops of the tea tree oil, and we spray all the mats after every use. Keeps them smelling nice and fresh.

I throw my mats in the washing machine. I use unscented, no perfumes or dyes added detergent. I add several drops of Lavender Essential Oil to the liquid soap. I do this with all my laundry too. Then I hang outside on the line to dry completely, which all depends on the weather.

Thank you for the suggestions. I am going to do the tea tree oil thing as I already have a bottle at home. I have a super thick natural rubber mat, I think my mat may break my washing machine. The lavender oil sounds nice though. Thank you again so much for your help.

Oils, greases and solvents destroy latex (rubber).

Just use lukewarm water (no soap or a special rubber detergent) and pat dry with a towel if you don't want to risk the gentle setting on your washing machine. If you need more than a wipe down, dry dunking the mat in the bath tub.

Do not dry outdoors either as latex is sensitive to direct sunlight.
