Subject: Yoga Therapy?

Is anyone here interested in yoga as therapy? Such as the Viniyoga or Phoenix Rising methods?

I have a Masters in Psychology, and I'm a yoga instructor with a 200-hour training certification. It would be so great to combine the two, but I don't personally know anyone who does it.

I've read and loved The Heart of Yoga by Desikachar. I also just ordered a couple Viniyoga books by Gary Kraftsow.

Any opinions/feedback would be welcome.

Thanks,
Carole

i know a couple of yoga teachers/therapists/social workers who do this. most of them simply combine practices. one of them is pheonix rising, the rest are other schools of yoga.

i don't think you need any specific training, really, if you already have the psychology stuff, you just have to figure out how to integrate the two fields that you already know. once you have that, it should be fine. Continuing education is important, of course, and i fully support it.

International Association of Yoga Therapists might interest you as well--iayt.org.

Hello,

I, too, am very interested in yoga therapy. I studied Gary Kraftsow's books during my teacher training and use many Viniyoga techniques in teaching classes and working with private clients. I do not have a Master's in Psychology, though, but boy, do I wish I did! I want to know more! It seems that the more I learn, the more I need to learn! I am hoping to be able to take some advanced teacher training courses/workshops on yoga therapy - if I can find some place closer to where I live than Hawaii! Btw, I know someone who combines psychology and yoga in my area and she seems very successful.

Same here, I've been nurtering this interest for a little while now, in fact I posted about it here a while ago.

I think your reference here is the very well know Mukunda stiles. He wrote a book called structural yoga therapy. It's very complete. I reccomend it.

He has a great forum where he always answers posts from people seeking help with various problems and it's quite interesting:

Also, you might want to have a look at these sites:

http://www.iayt.org/ and http://www.yogatherapycenter.org/ and http://www.yogatherapy.org/index.php

I think that in the UK it's being endorsed by the NHS (national health service)
