FIFA 12. The game also generated $200 million in digital revenues, an increase of 94% over FIFA 12. EA has extended its exclusive licensing agreement with the game governing body, F eacute;d eacute;ration Internationale de Football Association, until December 31, 2022.This agreement allows EA to use player and sports team likeness and logos in its video games and gives it an edge over other soccer based franchises like Pro Evolution Soccer. Electronic Arts has also announced an agreement with Disney to create games based on the Star Wars franchise. Given the immense popularity of its titles, we expect EA to make a smooth transition to the next generation of consoles. The company expects a 7% increase in packaged goods and distribution revenues in fiscal 2014. Is The Premier League About To Become An American TV Phenomenon?. (Image credit: AFP Getty Images via daylife) Barclay’s Premier League soccer delivered solid viewership for its seasonal debut this past weekend on US television: Its games on NBCSN averaged 443,000 viewers, and a game on NBC averaged 792,000. More than 5.7 minutes of programming was streamed online. NBC did some smart marketing for it, including a faux feature about a football coach trying to understand the game (hilariously played by Jason Sudeikis). Some pundits report that these results evidence a bright future on American TV screens for soccer…er, I mean football . I think there are a few mitigating factors to consider before reaching that conclusion. A portion of those viewers were likely there for curiosity’s sake and nothing more. While the viewership tallies were solid, they pale in comparison to the numbers reported by other sports. Baseball delivers something near the NBCSN numbers for not 4 but 90 or so games every week , and national games pull 3x or more than NBC did. Football (of the American variety) is far larger, reporting 17 million average viewers for each game during the season (the numbers go up during the playoffs). I’d also question how many viewers were actively watching those soccer games, which don’t fit the conventions of television or our expectations, at least those of us who aren’t diehard fans. Few interruptions during two halves of a whole game of indeterminate length makes hockey’s odd three period structure seem downright sensible. Understanding how the game is played can be daunting and, other than the moments of physical contact, the penalties incompressible. We want to see players score, only that doesn’t happen often. And the possibility that a game could end in a tie violates our patriotic duty to always declare winners and losers.
