Subject: buying a mat, help!

I am new to yoga and want to buy my own mat for home and studio. I find the thin mats at the studio are hard on my knees and other joints. Will a 1/4'' thick mat be okay for me for hatha?
I don't understand why certain mats are used and when.
Please someone advise!

Yoga sticky mats were originally designed to keep you stable during standing postures. If you are always worried that your feet will slip out from under you, you can't relax, and the whole point is to relax within the yoga postures. The new 1/4 inch mats were designed in response to people who said "Yeah, the sticky mats are great for keeping me stable, but I don't get any cushioning from it". However, I believe they fall short of that goal, and do not provide enough cushioning (for knees, tailbones, spines, etc) if that is what you need. I recommend to my students who need extra cushioning to just buy a regular sticky mat, and then bring something else to place on top for those times when you need extra cushioning- a blanket is good because you can lay it over the mat for when you are lying down, and for kneeling you can fold it to whatever thickness you need. Or use a pillow or foam mat. Whatever you decide, good luck!

I just bought the asana mat from here. So far, it seems fine to me.
