How difficult was it for you to learn the proper names of the asanas? Been practicing Iyengar yoga now for 2 months and find it extremely difficult to remember the names. Namaste

Hi Irma in California,
yah, these sanskrit names are a major pain in the ****, aren't they? Me, I'm stickin with the english names, since I'm German they are hard enough for me to learn.

It takes repetition. Using them, breaking them down, and using them again helps.

The one interesting thing about using Sanskrit, is that it's like Latin in medicine, law, and botany, or French in cooking: No matter where you travel, the Sanskrit names have everyone doing the same thing at once.

It's worth it.

Yeah Bruce, I see a terrible pose every time I look into the mirror during practice

We had a back bending class tonight at the Anusara studio. Talk about terrible. Man. I'm so tight in the shoulders my teacher thought I had congenital issues with my back. That is, until I showed her photo proof of the fact I was a competative gymnast in college. Of course, although my body remembers that was 25 years ago, my mind says, "I WANNA DO ITTTTTTTT"

Terrible.
A terrible pity.

No Bruce, I can't do it. Haven't seen it but the name tells me that it is not a thing an overweight beginner like me can do. All I wanted to say is that all asanas look terrible when I do them. It always feels right until I have a look in the mirror and then ... oy vay Who's that fat sausage making a slapstick comedy out of yoga? Thinks he's funny ... that sucker ...
