|
| NOway, Pilates is NOT a spiritual practice. |

| Spiritual is defined by your intention. Any activity can be spiritual. |

| I would be very interested and also thankful to personally meet someone who became Spiritual by doing Pilates or is becoming currently so. Please oblige me.

| Well, if gaining awareness about your body is spiritual, I'm in. I started pilates before yoga, and it really opened my mind about my well being. As far as it compares to yoga, it doesn't. Yoga appeals to the mind much more than pilates ever could, in my opinion. |

| Agreed, Champion-Mouser. Nearly any activity can be spiritual if it is done with awareness and intention. Naturally some activities lend themselves more easily to a spiritual practice, but even cleaning the apartment can be a meditative and/or spiritual practice. Pilates and yoga have different backgrounds (with some commonalities), but I don't think that that means that pilates can't be spiritual to some. Spirituality is so personal and subjective that it's impossible to say that what works for one will work for another... |

Due to the above answers, I must restate my question as follows:
Please let me know
- what you mean by Spiritual ?
- whether you became Spiritual using Pilates?
- what is the difference in Spiritual and Non Spiritual considering whatever your definition of Sprituality is.
Thanks.

| Spirituality is different for all.
To me a walk in the forest is a spiritual experience. A beautiful sunset. A honeybee buzzing through my garden. The sound and smells of the ocean, or the clean scent of fresh water. These are all spiritual to me, as I am a Pantheist.
I practice both Pilates and Yoga to keep my body supple, lean and strong. I'm not one for meditation, unless it's contemplating how the natural web of life surrounds me. My exercising calms me, but it isn't where I look for spirituality. |

| To me, 'spiritual' is looking inward and be one with my body and soul. I connect that to anything peaceful and calming such as medidating, relaxing, stretching after a good workout (which is kinda funny because i workout to hard rock music), so pilates definitly fits in to these categories. I can't generalize and speak about all of the exercises that Pilates includes, because some are more intense and some are more relaxing. But after all, Pilates is your quality time with yourself as your are doing something good to improve yourself, and I consider that a spiritual experience. |

| "does pilates have the same spiritual meaning and background as yoga?" No - although I understand everyone else's replies that it can be a spiritual practice, to my knowledge there is no spiritual teaching behind Pilates. It was developed to use as rehab for soldiers and was taken up by dancers for the same reason. Yes, some of the movements are similar and may have been inspired by yoga. Yes, it may put you more in touch with yourself and therefore perhaps be spiritual for you. But I don't think any Pilates teachers actually teach any form of spiritual practice. They teach exercise, plain and simple. |

| dear tourist:
I thank you for stating in a better way what I wanted to say initially. After all, you are a tourist. I thank you again. Now, I can with firmness state: "Pilates may connect one with oneself if that connection has not already occurred, but beyond that it is NOT a spiritual practice, and definitely not the same as Yoga".
