| I have been a long time Bikram person. I tried Ashtanga, or a version of it recently. Lot's of
Downward facing dog. Today by left thumb was a little numb most of the day ( better now).
What this about??? How do I prevent this without giving up any doggie asanas.
The instructor told me to face my fingers forward, which I did, but something went wrong. |

| Hi Peggy,
I'm not bikram specialist nor an ashtanga nut but doing lots of doggies. Our teacher always tells us to spread the fingers and I guess it's all about dividing the pressure on as much surface as possible. You probably just had to much pressure on a single part of your hand and pinched a nerve. No big problem I would say. |

| My instructors always remind us to have "starfish hands" - fingers spread wide and the middle finger pointing straight ahead...As far as the pressure on the hand, I've been told that most of the pressure should be centered on the palm running from the pointer finger down to the ball of the thumb (hard to explain without a visual, sorry) and that to check this try lifting the other fingers. Once I got that everything seemed to snap into place. Where's Christine to tutor us???? |

| Thank you for your clarity and encouragement. It is better already. The instructor did say to
spread my fingers, but I forgot. Oh well, now I remember. |
