What is the difference between Ashtanga and Hatha Yoga? They seem very similar, I know Ashtanga is a type Hatha Yoga...Some poses seem the same. I am confused!!!!

The term "hatha" is one of the 8 limbs of yoga, under which asana or the physical practice of yoga falls. All yoga using asana is hatha. "Hatha" is the umbrella, if you will.

Ashtanga is one of the physical practice traditions under this umbrella. Ashtanga is of the Krishnamacharya line. (I've probably misspelled his name.) Iyengar and Viniyoga are the other two. There are many off-shoots from these 3 practices, which explains the similarities of the uses of the asana.

Yoga asana is not particular to any one type of hatha yoga. The asana are what the asana are, but a lineage might put a different twist on it, such as the varieties of
(Note that in order to actually teach Ashtanga, one is ostensibly to be authorized by Pattabhi to do so. All others are again, ostensibly, yoga posers! But that is another discussion.) Anyway, a student needs to investigate a teacher as they would their doctor. After all. We trust doctors with an injury, but we trust yoga teachers with our whole mind, body and spirit.

I hope that gives you an idea of why you can go from teacher to teacher and have asana deja vu!
