Subject: The Lure of Backbends

I asked this a little while ago but it didnt post!?  Still learning this thing.  I wonder, what are the biggest benefits of doing backbends?  I looked online and even saw a yoga class dedicated to 'only' backbends.  I am even drawn to them, even though I am far from doing it well. What's up?

I love backbends myself.
What I loved at first was that doing my first full backbend indicated to me how far I'd come in terms of flexibility and strength in the back, in comparison to when I first started. A very liberating and exciting feeling!
I also love backbends because they're poses that I notice change and progress in very quickly.
They're also said to be some of the best ways to open the Heart chakra region, which I find very appealing!
I'm not sure I'd be drawn to a pure backbend yoga school though for myself: for me, backbends tend to round off a class really nicely, after I've done alot of prep work. And I love them so much now that I'd dread too much repetition making them boring!

Me too. I Like back bends! It has quite lot of benefits.

In one of the articles I read it said that the ancient yogis fully understood the vulnerability of the spine and the tendency for slight spinal misalignments to occur. They also knew that if the spine was kept flexible by yoga poses there would be much less chance of spinal misalignments. Some of the poses will even correct some minor misalignments. If you do nothing to improve your spine's flexibility, as you get older, your spine will deteriorate further and the spinal nerves will effect too. It will leads to lot of sicknesses. It says Flexibility of your spine can keep you young.

Some of the back bend posses and their benefits are as follows : (Typing English names is easier )

Camel – Extend and tones the whole spine, it corrects drooping shoulders and make shoulders more broader and strong

Dog – good for those suffering from slipped discs

Bow – this brings elasticity to the spine and tones the abdominal organs

Arch – tones the spine, gives lightness to the body

Pigeon - Stretches the thighs, abdomen, chest and shoulders, and neck
Stimulates the abdominal organs , Opens the shoulders and chest

I like backbends for the release they bring. Sometimes a good string of backbends
can relieve the blues. Other times they stir things up, and the effort of calming
the mind is the tonic. After a back bending series, I'm usually spent and ready
for a few calming poses following by savasana.
