Subject: Neti pot ?

I have had an awful head cold that woun't go away. This morning I dusted off my neti pot and gave it a try(why it has dust is another story). It really helped clear things up for 3 hours or so. It got me thinking how this neti pot might effect my breathing in my home pratice? Also that it might help my running(on a treadmill). I seem to have a simi preminant clogged r nostrel. I am cursious what you guys think. Yea I know Bruce Hates neti Pots. But does anyone at the forum use them, and to what effect?

Thanks

I've never used a Neti Pot, but I've always been interested in giving it a try. Would it be good for congestion due to allergies?

I use mine a lot and it can be good for allergies & congestion. What's odd is that it sometimes makes my nose congestion seem immediately worse, but with regular use I find that the rest of my head feels clearer. It's awesome for sinus headaches, and for reducing that phlegm in the back of the throat. I also get fewer colds when the sinuses are clean.

However, I do find when I'm uber-congested it kind of runs down the back of my throat and gives me a very sore throat! It's highly possible that I'm doing something wrong.

Are you putting in salt. 1/4 teaspoon per quart. That's what my doctor recommended.

To ALL of U;

Do NOT do any Jala Neti or Vastra Neti when you already have COLD, Allergies, or Congestion. It must be done only with Healthy Nose. It is NOT meant for making NOSE healthy.

Any recommendations on where to buy a good Neti pot? What I've seen/read
so far suggests that something cheap & replaceable is best, like plastic. China
is fragile, and the metal ones look like they'd need a lot of scrubbing. Plastic
can be used for a while and then thrown out when it gets smelly.

You can probably by one from your chemist. That's where mine came from. Actually it's a present from my mum ......... it told her I would be happy with money next time if she was short of ideas ... Bless her. Haven't tried it yet, it's a scary little implement that looks like a cross between a plastic watering can and an old fashioned hearing aid.

Hi Neel,

Why should you only use it when healthy? I haven't tried it yet, but have some singer friends who say that when they feel a cold coming on they use it and it helps a lot. Of course, it could all be psychological....when you make your living with something in your throat affected by the slightest illness, mental crutches can abound. I don't get sick much, but I was thinking of getting one just in case.

Dear Maria:
When one feels good after using Neti during the illness of respiratory track, it is a reaction of the body to the water where the symptom of the illness is suppressed. This ccan be done by many ways not only by neti. I wish to give another example: Let us say one has a rash on the skin. One can remove this symptom by application of garlic paste, mud, antiseptic cream, oil paint or anything which is worse than what is coming out of the rash. The skin is closed to save the body from outside influence.

Now, when one is healthy and then drinks water by nose, it gives exercise to that part making it strongerr to some extent. Also, if there is any dirt, it cleans it. Also, it excites nervoous system which gives a fresh feeling and this can be used for Meditation with some benefit.

As for Neti Pots, any pot which can be used, whicch can be kept cleaan, and which shall not injure the nasal passage is OK. Real neti is performed without the Pot.

I use mine (which is just a small tea pot) when I am desperate. I am somewhat prone to sinus infections and find it can clear the passages when everything is stagnant and threatening to get infected. I have no desire to use it when I am healthy (sorry Neel!) because even when I use it properly, it is unpleasant at best. I'm sure it gets better with practice but who wants to practice?

I was considering getting my mother a neti pot. She has no actual sinus condition, but she uses nose spray several times every single day. It is more psychological than necessity. I was wondering if the neti pot is safe to use everyday. Would that be more healthy than the nasal spray?

I am especially anxious to see what Neel thinks of this one. :-)

Oh, it would be MUCH healthier than a spray (unless she is using plain saline, I guess). I have heard of people actually burning out the nasal tissues with that stuff. One person was even asked by her doctor if she was using cocaine because her nose was so messed up. Do get her to switch to saline or use the neti pot - she is headed for trouble with the nose sprays, for sure.

I was thinking that the neti pot would be better. She's used that nose spray since I can remember, so she's used it for at least 20+ years or so! I've read the warning labels to her. I will tell her that little cocaine story! Interesting!

I first heard about Neti pots from an Ear Nost and Throat specialist. He recommends using it when highly congested with the water temperature as hot as you can stand it. When I did it, I was able to reduce medications considerably and my cold got better faster.

Doesn't the very hot water burn the inside of your nose? The instructions that came with mine (from the Himalayan Institute) say to use a temperature very close to body temperature or slightly warmer. Most of the time that works best, but when very congested, I intuitively want to make the water hotter. Perhaps I should just give it a try and see what happens! I have quite a head cold and nothing else seems to be working.

Dragon, PLEASE have a camera ready when your mom opens the package and sees a netti pot--then please take another one when you tell her how to use it.

My ENT said that he found that the higher than body temperature helped kill the viruses and bacteria. He said that it should be like a hot bath. As hot as you can get it and still be comfortable. He even published a paper on it. But it was years ago so I don't remember where. To me it feels a little like going into a steam room. The heat itself helps clear out the head.

SORRY BRUCE, but you know some disgusting things work.

Dear Dragoo: Neti is far better than Nasal Spray. Actually, better way to state this is: Nasal Spray is far more worse than the Neti.

All: Nei as a Yogic Process (see my comments earlier in this), is to be done with cool water (not freezing but room temperature or slightly below). Warm water with Salt shall give a clearing effect, which is not the Yogic purpose.

MrD: What your ENT told about hot water, and killing bacterias, is B.S.

So anyway, where do I buy a decent neti pot? It was suggested that I try my
chemist, but here in the States (where we'd call it the pharmacist) such things
aren't stocked. I'm sure that I could find "something" in google, but it's always
nice to get a recommendation.

I second that motion.

I'll probably end up Googling one up when I am able anyway, but it would be nice to know the best "brand" or what to look for in a good Neti pot.

Dear Dragon:
You as well as your Mom must understand: a) they need positive attitude towards neti as compared to Nasal Spray and should be prepared to wait for some time to get effect. Nasal Spray gives immediate relief and long term disability. Whereas Neti may not give immediate Relief. b) It may actually give Immediate discomfort c) and lastly, as I said, Neti should be performed only when she does NOT have present inflammation of the nasal passage, which she will know when she does neti with cool water (not freezing). d) And, really lastly, Neti may not be a complete solution to her situation. And, actually, is NEVER a complete solution to any situation.

Thanks for the advice Neel. :-)

I know it will take her a long time to get off of the nose spray. It's like a drug addiction to her. She doesn't get a lot of colds, so I don't perceive a reason for her to be using the nasal spray at all. I will tell her not to use it (Neti) when she's "inflamed" though. I hope she will give it a try more than once. If it's too uncomfortable, she may abandon the idea all together. I just hope to find something to decrease the nasal spray usage.

Thanks. :-)
