I'm curious about the salt, is it regular "table" salt or something more finely ground? I know here in the Midwest we have to use salt with iodine and wonder if that would make a difference.

Expert Yogi Posts: 8442 | Sea salt and kosher salt are also nice and there are neti solutions you can buy now at health food stores - more $$ than salt, I'm sure!

Expert Yogi Posts: 2479 Location: A Blue State | I know I keep saying it, but I wanna get a neti pot. Just gotta find it. Maybe in one of the Yahoo Stores? By the way, does anyone notice a difference if they just use tap water w/o the salt? I understand the electrolyte balancing, I just wonder whether it is actually that significant.

Water seems "refreshing," salt seems like it would burn...

Expert Yogi Posts: 2479 Location: A Blue State | Yeah, that's kind of what it seems like, although the dilutions they mention (1/4 tsp per quart) are low enough that you could probably drink them comfortably.

At that dilution I'm thinking that it's probably not any more salty than your tears. Edited by caseylane 2005-02-15 11:22 AM

Ok - decided to go ahead and try it for a while (over a week or so) and it really does make a difference. I don't have a cold but was curious to see if it made a difference in less warm up time for singing (less goop to get rid of...). So I use it in the morning as part of my routine. Pretty disgusting at first , but now I can do it in a flash. Definitely helps with the singing part and my head does feel clearer, but the thing I didn't expect is that in a weird way my mouth just feels fresher......anyone else get that to? No boyfriend has complained mind you! but there are just times where I would grab a piece of gum just in case. I guess it makes sense if you think about it. Maria

Expert Yogi Posts: 2479 Location: A Blue State | Since this thread is back, I will confess: I bought a Neti Pot this weekend! It is kind of an interesting thing to do...I'm still trying to get the mechanics down right...I found that the water flows more easily on one side than the other...I could explain, but I'm sure no one cares about my sinuses. Anyway, I will keep at this for a few weeks to see what it's like. Q: What conceivable difference would it make whether one adds iodized or noniodized salt to the water? If I can eat iodized salt, how can it be harmful to my sinuses? NB: At the dilutions recommended, it's vaguely salty, but not irritating at all....

Bay Guy: Glad to see that you are stretching some more of your limits with the aquisition of a neti pot. I've been using one of these contraptions for several years now and it still flows better on one side than on the other. I guess some of our heads (sinus cavities in particular) are just lopsided! Also, I have found that living in a dry climate makes the salt unnecessary. I just add a tiny pinch of salt in my neti sometimes. I have found that the most important thing to do is to use purified water. The chlorine added in most municipal water makes a bit of a burning sensation in the sinuses (so what's that doing to our insides?). To All: It seems that the neti pot makes it much easier to breath during yoga and meditation practices. It also seems to help with overall health (I haven't been sick for years--but that could also be the yoga and yogic living) and it just makes sense to clean your nose to get rid of all the toxins that are brought in with dust particles (especially if you are a construction worker or someone working in a lot of dust and/or air pollution). Simply blowing the nose doesn't get it all out of our system--and sometimes blowing makes your ears pop!! Namaste

Just kidding , I just happen to live with these guys, they're kind enough to put up with me and let me pay my taxes here while taking the P*$$ out of my accent I'm from a few hundred miles down the pond, hence the "frog"

I have a yukky neti pot story. I used to live in a big shared house, and I kept my plastic neti pot in the bathroom. One day I went to find it, and it was missing. I searched all around, and couldn't find it at all. Then I went to ask my flatmates, and found one of them filling up the iron wiith it. Seems she'd been doing this for months, as she thought that's what it was for!

To avoid netti pot confusion, try the Afroyogi method. Trot down to your local saltwater beach, stick your head underwater and comence snorting.

Loic, hey, sorry - didn't mean to strip you of your national identity. By all means take advantage of the situation there (and those British ) ) - heard that a lot of people are popping over since there is more work across the channel. But I will now officially REALLY rave about the Neti without going into too many details for Bruce. We had a severe temperature change in the last 48 hours in NY which normally makes my head and sinuses go haywire and which would force me to a decongestant. Not this time - I feel great. Wish I had tried this years ago!

Okay, you guys convinced me. I just went and ordered one on line. I've had sinus issues for years (Michigan Nose, an official diagnoses by doctors btw), so if it works on it I'll be yelling Miracle from my bedroom window.

Hope it works for you like it has for me. Check out the link I posted further back in the thread, if you haven't already. That really helped me figure out what the heck to do with the thing.

I have another question. I always figured that you would do the Neti in the mornings, during or after your shower. After reading a bit about it, would it be better to do it after work? I work in a plating plant and the air, although it passes all testing, isn't the best. I'm just wondering if clearing things out as soon as I could after work be better or wait until morning when my sinuses are usually pretty dry from the heat in the house. ETA to say thanks to Maria, the link was pretty helpful. Edited by caseylane 2005-03-13 11:41 PM

Okay, got my Neti and have used it almost a week. To be honest I haven't noticed much difference. Oh there is the first hour or two, but not after. Also, I seem to be much more thirsty, maybe that saline solution in the sinuses? I'm using the little packets of salt for now so I know I'm not oversalting my solution.

I have to ask, and please excuse my ignorance - what on earth is a neti pot? I've been trying to guess by reading this thread... and I still don't know, other than it has something to do with the nose! LOL! I have a lot of sinus & allergy problems, which made me wonder about this, until Neel discounted that idea. I use Ayr brand saline spray most of the time, except this time of year when it gets really bad, and I have to use Nasonex as well - our pollen falls like snow in this area. At any rate... if any of you would be so kind as to enlighten me... (per se!) Echo
