Subject: The Challenge of Savasana

I do believe that Savasana is one of the most difficult and challenging postures in yoga. There's a general misconception that Savasana is just about lying down and vegging out, both mentally and physically. In actual fact, it should be an attempt to completely still the body and the mind in preparation for death (as it happens to us all, we might as well learn to embrace it).

I used of Savasana as a time to be as lazy as I could. Then I went to India to practise more deeply, and one day in Savasana a fly kept on landing on me, and I kept on twitching. My guru took me aside at the end of the class, and told me I didn't understand Savasana in the least, and that once I mastered it, I shouldn't even be able to feel a snake crawling across my skin, much less a fly.

After that I began to approach Savasana with a different attitude, and the results have been amazing. Once I've managed to relax my body, and then my mind, it's like being in a very different world altogether. Once or twice I've even had out of body experiences. I always emerge completely refreshed.

The last thing I'd like to add is that if you are thinking "what am I doing lying here?" and "I'd like to leave" then you're not doing Savasana!

Namaste,

Kate

Sorry - this was meant to be in reply to the "I Hate Savasana" message earlier.
