| I've just started to do an ashtanga-based class a few weeks ago, and I was just wondering -- what asanas are really important to do when I practice at home? I always start with the sun salutations and end with savasana, but if I only have a short amount of time, are there any other poses (or type o f pose) that are really important to do each time I practice?
Thanks! |

What to do each time you practice really depends on what you are trying to
develop in your yoga. There's no set list for everybody. For a beginner,
maybe working on Utthita Trikonasana, Paschimottanasana, Janusirsasana,
Adho Mukha Savanasana, and Urdhva Muka Savanasana would be enough
daily required practice, mixed with other stuff of course. I would pick things
that will help you develop the strength and flexibility needed to do more
challenging poses.

| The standing poses are the foundation of yoga, they teach all the alignment you need, and they build up your strength.
Tadasana is the basis for all the standing poses
Trikonasa and Parsvakonasa build your strength.
Adho Mukha Svanasana
Uttanasana
The next standing poses to do would be:
Virabhadrasana 1 and 2
Parsvattonasana
Prasarita Padottonasana
This roughly mirrors the first weeks of BKS Iyengars 300 week course. If you practise these regularly it will build your strenght and alingment evenly. Have fun! |
