Thanks a lot

That's a mystery to me Thushara. Seated vjrasana is a nice, open position for digestin but I can think of others that are probably better. A forward bending vajrasana would help by massaging the abdomen maybe - we need another opinion!

Vajrasana and Digestion: Vajrasana does NOT improve digestion in true sense. When you sit in Vajrasana, it stops the blood flow in the legs, I mean reduces it. That blood now is available for the upper part and the most effect of it is in the areas near the abdominal cavity. This gives a relief feeling when one has a heavy stomach or filled intenstines, due to whatever, for example gas.

Digestion is a chemical process and it mainly occurs in mouth and stomach and somewhat in intestines.

If you sit in Vajrasana in a comfortable way, not stressed, if you have a gas in the colon, it will pass out. That is not digestion.

However, if you take a heavy meal and sit in Vajrasana it will allow more blood to the stomach area and help in digestion only as far as the muscle efficiency in that area is concerned. It does not change the Chemistry of the stomach, directly.

SuptaVeerasana : Which stretches the abdominal cavity also does same, by relieving stomach. It DOES NOT actually digest the food as written in many Yoga Books, including the world famous ones.

However, Suptavirasana makes the muscles of the abdominal cavity flexible, stronger, etc. thus helping the digestion indirectly.

The same thing happens with the forward bend in virsana, which Tourist described.

Now, when you look from the plexus point of view and acupuncture point of view, the story is slightly different and it is not possible to describe it all here.

To add, lastly, there is NO harm by sitting in Virasana and Suptavirasana, and Vajrasana after eating food.

Best Luck.

Thanks Tourist and Kulkarnn for your detailed explanation. I saw this in an article that Vajrasana helps to imrove the digesting process and I was curious how. Now I know what they have meant by that.

Thanks again

Hi all, I`m back visiting this forum a bit more now :-)

As far as I know, you have a Nadi called Vajra located in your legs and pressing/ manipulating this one increases the digestion (eg. fire in your navel).
