what would be the effect of sarvangasana, halasana, viparita karani or other "throat" asanas on a woman who had her thyroid gland surgically removed? are they recommended or do they put too much stress on this area?

thank you,
ganesha

OM ganeshaaya namah: (salutations to shree ganesha):

When the thyroid is removed, one has to do a proper version of the asanas you mentioned, not any version of them. These depend on the person, etc, so can not be taught through text. Now, when a proper version is done, the effect on the person will be Total Effect - the effect related to the thyroid gland, with no problems.

ganesha - are you referring to someone who has already healed from the surgery or are you talking about the recuperation phase? I would suggest waiting a couple of months post-surgery to practice things like shoulderstand but once recovery is complete, no problem.

thank you for your answer Neel,

this woman does not attend a class but practices at home, so she does not know how to modify these asanas: is it better to avoid them then, until she finds a good teacher?

yes dear ganesha, if she does not know and does not have experienced teacher, she should avoid them. but, then she does not get benefits of them as well as she is not doing them. so, she can either forget the benefits or try to find the teacher.
