Subject: another sick person in need

Hey guys, sending out a request for positive thoughts and wishes for my brother and sister-in-law tonight. Sister-in-law has a disease called ITP, in which the immune system attacks the blood platelets and wreaks havoc with the blood's ability to clot. She has had some ups and downs, but this week things have gotten very bad. Her platelet counts have gotten so low that she could bleed to death from banging her knee on the end table.

She's just returned from the hospital, where a mismanagement of her medication has caused aseptic meningitis - the lining of her skull and spine is swollen and causing severe pain. There is very little they can do other than wait it out and then try the medication again. The goal is to get her "healthy" enough to take her spleen out (apparently the spleen is the chief culprit of this platelet problem), of course right now surgery is out of the question because she would never stop bleeding.

She and my brother are 27 years old, have shaky jobs and even shakier insurance, and they are both scared to death (plus of course, she feels like complete $h!t). I don't know how their paths will play out, but I am praying for them both to find the strength to get through this - they are so frightened and confused.

You guys have been so wonderful and compassionate when these things crop up . . . if you would just take a moment to send your loving, positive thoughts our way, it can only help.

Thank you!!!!
Jean

Wow, they (and you) will be in my thoughts for sure.

Good thing your brother has a sis like you. Sometimes family and hope is all you have when things like this happen.

Hey, how have *you* been feeling lately? Didn't you just have an operation?

Wow, reading this story gave me the shivers. Of course my thoughts will be with your bro and SIL. Heck, just now I'm not able to think of anything else!
Sometimes we (or at least I) tend to forget how blessed all of us with good health are. When after my last check-up the doctor mentioned that I was probably the most "boring" patient she'd ever seen I took it as granted. Makes you think...

Thank you so much guys. This is such a strange disease and they feel so helpless!

Kabu - I did have surgery 2 months ago, but it turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to me! I got the chance to see my own yoga therapy knowledge in action, and it gave me a 5-week break from a stressful job that I hate. It was an opportunity to rest, think clearly, and make some lucid plans for my future. Now I'm teaching more classes than I EVER have, and am quitting my crappy job in June to devote all my time to yoga, Pilates, and HEALTH!

I only hope that Andrea (my sister-in-law) can use this as an opportunity to heal and learn and change her life for the better as well. I'm very concerned about my brother; it's actually easier to be the person dealing with a health challenge than to helplessly sit and watch someone you love fall apart. I'd have been a train wreck if it were my husband who was sick instead of me.

BTW, Jean, so you've made your mind up about your job situation, huh? Good for you! Here's hoping it all works out fine.

And about being the hubby/wife of a sick person, you're spot-on. My BIL, who suffers from MS anyway, had a real health breakdown, when the operation on my sister went so wrong. Just the other day I told him on the telephone that he must think about himself too. He's no help if his health deteriorates any further at this point. He first wanted to quit all therapy and his daily swims but fortunately I could talk him out of that.

I have been thinking of you a lot throughout this, Afroyogi. Your situation seems so stressful and sad. I can tell you're a very strong person and you take everything in stride with good humor, I hope to be like you when things are spiraling down around me!

Yes, I put in my 2 months(!) notice at the rotten office job. The Y agreed to give me more hours, a pay increase at year-end, and let me start in June so I have a few weeks yet to squirrel away money. Plus, I got a line on some other teaching jobs. It looks like we won't starve to death or go bankrupt, but lifestyles will change! It is going to be very good for me - I'm so excited, I can't even sit still.

I didn't even tell my brother the good news, he's so scared and brokenhearted right now he can't process new information. I wish there were something I could do to ease the strain on him. When his wife's health starts to improve, he'll be ready for something cheery. I think right now he just needs to unload.
