| Well, for sniggles today during practice i decided to try the side-angle plank pose, turns out I held it much better on my right side than my left ( i am a southpaw.. ) anyways, I saw a couple variations at about.com's yoga site...now here is my question...are variations just that, a variation of a pose if you cannot come into the pose correctly? OR are the variations used to help strengthen other core muscles associated with that pose so eventually you are able to do the "correct" pose? |

And variations can be to make the pose harder than its basic version.
Like side plank being taken to Vasistasana --- going from feet together
to holding one leg up above yourself with one hand on the toes... |

This is so funny. We were working on variations for side plank in my class tonight. We did Vasistasana as well as bending the top leg like you would for tree. I always have with side plank and it's variations. It makes me feel so darn strong! |

| Although I'm rather a weakling I just lovelovelove the sideplank. Finally a pose that we old, stiff and overweight boys can do better than all the little yoga hotties. Yippie! Maybe that's the reason why only my male teacher includes this into his classes.

| Stefan - I just love to argue with you.
I can rock out on side plank! Both sides! The first time I tried was so exciting - totally surprised myself that I could stay up! |

| Nothing to argue over, Lora. I illegaly generalized and stand corrected. It's just my experience that in class all the pretty skinny girls break down in that pose while some of us inflexible guys are holding out like gargoyles. It's maybe just a question of the right technique.

| Side plank... my current favorite! My teacher prefers that we do a very simple, well aligned side plank. I, however, like to mix it up by opening my uppper arm/chest, putting my top foot on my bottom thigh (like tree). some times my teacher will have us walk the foot half way up and put it on the mat in front of or behind us. so, you are in side plank (say on the right side) and you put your left foot on the mat somewhere near the level of your hips. All I have to say to you "big boys" is... I may be a chick, but this pose doesn't phase me... Ardha Chandrasana on the left side, howeve... eeeesh |

Since we're talking variations, one my my current goals is to grab my foot while in Ardha Chandrasana. Today I came really close, feeling my toes just touch my hand. Then of course I fell right onto my butt! But I'm getting there. Maybe next month.

| I'm with ya, CG... this is one of the poses that I "aspired to" when I started practicing... and I'm "THIS" close!I can grab my big toe, but can't straighten my leg - yet.... I'm considering using a strap, but I'm not all that far... |
