Subject: starting new class

I'm starting a new class at a new studio tonight. I have only had 5 classes and they were about 5 months ago. I am so excited about starting up again. There are about 4 different studios that I am going to try out and see which one makes me feel the most comfortable. I am such a beginner and this site has answered alot of questions. Thank you for your support.

it was good. the location wasn't the greatest because there was a lot of outside noises coming in. i think there was an apartment on the next floor up. you could hear someone in high heels walking the floor. aside from that, it was nice. different from the other classes that i took. there are a few more locations to try out though. i'm not going to commit myself to this one yet. is anyone else bouncing around from studio to studio trying to find the right one?

yogadream- trying different studios is good when you are looking for the right fit. I would suggest trying several classes at each, however, since a different teacher or just a different day may be totally, well, different! If you were to come to one of my classes, for eample, you would possibly find one day was completely relaxation poses done lyng on a bolster or supported in some way. Another day, we might be sweating through some tough sun salutations or focusing on twists. We encourage people to register for a whole term (we actually only have drop-in for regular students) so they can get the flavour of the full experience.

As for noise, I am told that in India it is ALWAYS very noisy and there is really terrible air quality due to all the diesel fumes etc. I guess they guys in caves in the Himalayas do ok but the rest of us are stuck with traffic and what not Anyway, enjoy your search and if you find the right place, have fun!!

This reminds me of my house sometimes. I live in the countryside - the boondocks. It's mostly the ideal place to meditate and do yoga. HOWEVER, SOMETIMES, in the middle of the night a dog in the valley will start howling (not my dog, someone else's dog) and wake me from my beautiful sleep!!! Or, in the middle of yoga, same thing, a dog will bark. Sooo, needless to say, I have learned to deal with it. The best sleep I got recently was on vacation last week when I was on the Blue Ridge Parkway - no DOGS and the humans went to bed early. That was the best sleep ever!!

I think we are suppose to learn how to deal with all of life's noises, With the exception of certain Tibetan Buddhist yoga's that really do require the caves and total withdrawal from NOISE and People - then it is really important.

i understand that life is full of noises and that we need to work through them. the instructor did say that as she commented on the noises as they were happening. the next location is in an instructors home. it's in a quite neighborhood set back from the street. i'm sure it will be more quiet. i am so excited i can hardly wait.

YD - I teach at home in a quiet area as well. It IS very nice When my husband was building a kayak in our garage it was noisy with all the sanding but apparently at least one student found it soothing. So to each her own, I guess Better than when he stomps around making dinner or has NASCAR on too loud But yes, some nights when it is still and the windows are open to hear the birds and happy kids playing a block or so away, it is pretty special Enjoy!!

I think it's important to make a distinction between different types of noise as well.  Most street noise is pretty constant, so your mind will filter it fairly easily.  Something like the person walking around is much harder to deal with, since it's infrequent, and very audible.  I think it also depends on when the noises occur, since I don't really care as much during the practice, as during savasana.

That having been said, one of the first practices I went to the teacher came up to me and said "I'm sorry about the dog."  To which I said "What dog?"  And she said, "the one that was barking during savasana."  Obviously I was pretty out of it at the time.

YD - I am very lucky in my home practice as we have a big house and both kids more or less moved out (last one going at the end of Sept!). So in the winter I practice in my sewing room because it is easier and smaller to heat and in the summer I can practice in my studio where I have wall ropes and lots 'o props

Once I bought this Rainforest Cd that I thought would be real soothing and relaxing. WRONG!! It had all these jungle parrots and toucans yakking and screaming in the background of the nice sounding waterfall. I would not even let my own parrots hear that CD cause I was afraid they would LOVE it,

Anyway, sometimes up here in the mountains if the Blue Jay's are raising cain they can be just as abonoxious sounding....especially when they *think* they are imitating a red-tailed hawk, it always cracks me up,

Cyndi - I did the same thing! I could not believe the sounds the birds and other critters on the d*mn cd were making and I was using it to try to put a room full of toddlers to sleep And the water thing made me want to pee...

The worst is my own chihuahua attacking me while I practice. He has his own version of downward dog!! Usually, I end up downward facing the dog! He likes to get underneath me and give me incentive to keep flowing by nipping me or pulling my hair with his teeth. He is my number one distraction!! The cats also like to lie on anything I put on the floor. This includes my mat.......while I'm using it.

I was practicing in my parents' house not long ago, and their new cat
decided that I was just cozy. First she was walking back and forth under
me in Adho Mukha Svanasana, and then she curled up for a nap behind
my hands while I was in Sirsasana. Fortunately, I don't fall from that
too often anymore!

cats often gravitate to the spot in the house with the best energy. mine always falls asleep right on my mat. right now she's in the second bedroom where i practice and have my altar, fast asleep underneath.

so bayguy, it's a compliment!!!
