Subject: Colon pain

This is a little embarassing, but it's happened about a dozen times over the last year or so and I'm worried. Sometimes when I'm doing postures that involve sitting on the floor I get a considerable pain in my colon (at least I think that's where it's coming from), and it feels sort of like a cramp or spasm. The pain is strong enough to force me to stop doing the exercises, and it typically lasts about 10-15 minutes after I stop.

I'm worried because this never happened during my first several years of practicing yoga - why now? Also, my mother has a history of colon problems (hers were not related to yoga, however).

The only times I have ever experienced this pain is during yoga, but I can not pinpoint a specific posture as the culprit since the pain is not sudden. I've already had one doctor tell me that if it hurts to do yoga, then I should stop doing yoga. This "solution" is totally unacceptable to me.

Has anyone else experienced or even heard of this type of pain during yoga? Any suggestions for me?

Thank you

Perhaps it is time to clean your colon with some fiber and lots of water! Your plumbing may be backed up.

===> If it has happened dozen times in the past year and you are still not out of it: My suggestion a) NOT to give up Yoga. It has nothing to do with Yoga per say. It may be the way you are doing Yoga or what in Yoga you are doing. It is also related to many other things. b) Go to a good Yoga Teacher and take 5 at least private lessons. Then practice what the teacher taught for say 3 months. c) You must try at least 3 teachers each time better (more experienced or what you yourself feel as better than the previous.

Best luck.

I'm not a yoga expert, but just from personal experience I can say that I have noticed that certain poses do increase peristalsis(wave like contractions in the intestines and colon) in me. Typically bends and twists. And on occasions I've noticed those contractions can be a bit intense. Though it doesn't sound like anywhere near the level you're describing. And since I tend to be a bit sluggish I welcome it, shoot sometimes I intentionally do them for that purpose.

Now my husband is on the other side of the spectrum, he has IBS and a spastic colon. I know that sometimes those spasms can really get Very uncomfortable for him. One thing he's found that he claims is helpful is drinking peppermint tea. It's been shown in studies to relax those smooth muscles. I've even read some studies of peppermint essential oil being used by GI specialists following a colonoscopy for it's calming action on those muscles. He often takes some before long drives as sitting in the car for prolonged periods seems to set his system off.

Anyways, you might want to try paying attention to what poses you were working on prior to the episodes. Perhaps others know some counter poses that calm the digestive system, but again, I'm still a novice so other then confirming that I've noticed it also, I can't really offer anything. Good luck with figuring it out.
Be Well,
Selena

It sounds rather intense and I think I would get myself booked in for a physical exam, espcially given the family history. However, have you ruled out constipation? If you're also 'backed-up' at the time, then any dropping off your sitting bones and onto you coccyx might well cause a sensation a bit like being 'spiked'.

Thank you all for your replies. I greatly appreciate the input from each of you. I do already take lots of fiber and drinks lots of water. I occassionally do colon cleanses as well. I know I should probably see a doctor about the pain, but I recently lost my health insurance due to a job change. Unfortunately I may have to wait until I'm insured again. Until then, I'll try to be more aware of which poses I was doing prior to the onset of pain.

Thanks again for all your help, and best of luck to all of you!

I realize this is months after your post. I apologize for not responding sooner.

How often are you colon cleansing? The frequency of this is relevant so I am curious.
Also, since it hasn't been mentioned yet, what are your feelings around your job change and loss of health insurance? I'm wondering what, off the mat, in your life might be upsetting your GI tract.
Are you haveing any other symptoms?
Is this only when sitting on the floor?

What is your practice like?

I had this same problem few months back and when In did a colon cleansing, it was all gone. I would suggest you undergo a cleansing with a natural herb or colon cleansing products

I think the best thing you need to for now is to visit an specialist on that kind of health issue.
