| this morning, i was just slipping into a nice calm state, when all of the dogs in the neighborhood started barking. there is also a rooster next door, and it started to roost. i felt like i was on a farm. feeling a little overwhelmed by animal noise, i broke down and went to get my earplugs. i then slipped back into my state, and it was a very pleasant and fulfilling experience.
i thought about it, and wondered to myself...am i cheating? really, part of the whole meditation experience is to be in the present and simply observe.
i am somewhat new in my meditation practice, so perhaps over time i will not give in to my temptations. has anyone ever done this? what do you think- next time should i just sit and go with it? what about always meditating with earplugs from the get go? it really seems to help me, because all i can hear is my breathing, and my breathing is my vehicle for meditation practice. |

| Nah, I think you're fine. There's a mudra that involved plugging your ears, eyes, nose and mouth, so I'm sure this is acceptable. |

| I don't think earplugs are a problem, but I find it easier to keep my mind from wandering if there is something else going on.

| Maybe that's why the books all say to meditate really early in the morning - before the d*mn animals wake up! I would have trouble meditating with ear plugs but sleep is fine |

| Ear plugs shouldn't be a problem. May be once you master the technique you will start finding them unnecessary

That's Shanmukhi and Naunmukhi Mudra. Though the aim of these mudras is listening to inner sounds. |
