Hi, my name is james harbin Im 14 I live in texas and Ive been looking on your site for some time now about 3 days. I just now had the nerve to register an account. Im 208 pounds and overwieght child my whole family is overweight and I would like to do somthing about it. Im stopping all soda intake, Junk food inculding potato chips, and all eating habbits . I know its okay to eat but I dont know what kind of foods I need for healthy carbs. Im trying to like lettuce and spinach but I always end up throwing up. Somtimes it seems like there is no hope, Ive never tried eating good things because I didnt know what to eat that didnt have so many carbs or fatting carbs. I once went to a gym for about a month, but since im 14 I cant drive there and about only 2 times a week I went cardiovascular training. Im looking for a home method for eating right (teens) and weight loss, belly fat loss method (teens) if a 14 year old is not allowed to post on here.

First and foremost buddy is you need to display self control and moderation when eating. You already know what is good for you and what isn't. Eat lots of fruits and veggies, in a salad... steamed....or raw. You can ocassionally treat yourself to a slice of pizza or a glass of diet soda... ( remind you ocassionally....).
Be sure to drink plenty of water.......drinking lots of water will tend to curb hunger pains........ throw a lemon or a lime to flavor up the water a bit.

As far a working out, do what feels good for you whether it is lifting weights, walking, hiking....... or if you feel yoga is what you would like to do just be consistent, whatever it is be consistent, have a regular routine 2,3 times a week. Then after some time build it up a day here and then a day there.

As I tell my children, anything that is good for you never comes easy, expect to be frustrated, hungry and tired but keep chugging along.........its your ego's way of trying to control you

You have a wonderful support group here, when you need that extra push or a little advice....... your are already going in the right direction. Keep your head up!

Om Namah Sivaya

The following web-site has some excellent advice on both nutrition and on fitness without being over the top or confusing :

http://www.bbc.co.uk/health/

Regarding diet, take a look at my "Can't Win" thread under the weight loss section as I outline the healthy eating plan rules I'm following. Also, do a web-search for DASH as this also outlines a healthy eating plan for life.

In your situation, I would simply start out with walking as exercise to begin with as you know how to do that, don't need any specialist equipment, and aren't reliant on others to get you to a sports hall or whatever. Once your fitness level has increased a bit, you can investigate activities more local to you that you'd also enjoy doing (important if you're to be able to stick at it).

Good luck and well done on doing something about this now!

Hi James and welcome. Yes, you absolutely may post here. You have made a really good start on your new plan. Cutting out chips and soda will make a difference all by itself. I know someone whose first diet was just cutting out the fries he used to have with his daily Big Mac! It worked and then he moved on to eating better from there. You don't need to like spinach or lettuce to eat well, but do try it every now and then, just don't try to eat a whole salad. A bite or two or a bit on a sandwich might be a good start. My husband only eats spinach raw in wraps or cooked in spagetti sauce, so that's how he gets his spinach. You might also want to get into cooking for yourself, which is really fun. As I posted elsewhere, my daughter started watching Food Network and cooking at a very young age and now is training to be a chef

Just one more thing - how tall are you? I am curious about how much weight you think you need to lose. Good luck! Oh - one more - Orbilia doesn't just give good advice, she is a living example of how you CAN take control of your diet and lose weight. She has lost about 35 lbs. so far!

Wow..

I know how it feels to have to give up the stuff that you love to consume so that you can be healthy.

I used to eat doughnuts and jellybeans and chips and sugary sweets, and buttery creaminess everyday.

So, trying to deal with your will power first may be very difficult, but eventually you're gonna have to change some things in your life if you want to change some things in your life.

The biggest difference you can make right away is to increase your activity.

Yeah you could just get up and walk to the refrigerator or the kitchen for a snack, but what if you had to walk a mile before you let yourself have that snack? I think your body shape would change a noticable amount in about a month.

Activity doesn't have to be heart pounding sweaty super human activity. Get up and walk, get a shovel and make a garden, go walk to the local convenience store and look at the magazines once a day, if that's not far enough pick something that is about a mile away.

The more active your body is the less time you're gonna have to eat the foods that aren't that good for you anyway.

Yeah, you need to get your eating under control, but you need to get active.

Can you stand up straight and then bend over and touch your toes?

If you can try doing it 20 times. Then go for a walk.

Do you have a lawn to mow? Mow it, get other people in your neighborhood to let you mow their lawns as well. For crying out loud you're old enough to be working your but off, kiddo.

My son is 15 years old at the end of this month.... he's a pretty active kid, but if he wasn't I'd put him to work, and that's what I recommend you do.

You need to put your body to work and do something.

Once your activity is way up, and as long as you attempt to have a good diet you'll be doing fine in no time.

NOW, there are some things that you need to eliminate and it looks like you're starting out.

No soda
No crackers
No chips
No cookies
No sweet box cereals
No, and I mean NO partially hydrogenated vegatable oils or fully hydrogenated vegatable oils--THESE WILL MAKE YOU FAT FASTER THAN ANYTHING---AND I MEAN IT. So if you like peanut butter, it has to be ALL NATURAL peanut butter.

Hey, if it comes out of a wrapper or a box, forget about it.

No white bread, No white sugar, No white flour--that means No pancakes, No muffins, No doughnuts, No cake, No snack cakes

NO Powerbars, No energy bars, No granola bars, No protein shakes, NADA

Thirsty? Drink Water.

Hungry, eat some grilled chicken breast, or a boiled egg or a slice of real cheese not velveta or american

Not enough, have a piece of vegatable or fruit...but limit the amount of sugary fruit you eat.

\\Old Fashioned Oatmeal-boiled in water-Eat it.

Ground Flaxseed Meal--learn to love it\
Learn about whole wheat and other whole grain foods--learn how to prepare them and eat them.

Do not apply any syrups or sugars to make them taste good.

Now, once you loose all the weight you may want to reward yourself.

Once you loose all the weight a reward will certainly be warranted and well deserved.

Sound tough? It is. That's why so many people are overweight, being overweight in the USA is easy.

Are you tough enough to do what it takes? I believe you are, because you would like to do something about it.

So, to change some things in your life.....CHANGE some things in your life.

Good Luck.

I have been moaning here about my sugar problems. While we were on holidays, I actually had less and less sugar on my morning (plain oatmeal and ground flax) porridge. Curious! Once we got home, it has started bumping up again and the only reason I can see is that it is in a clear container here and it was in a non-clear container there. I think it just didn't "call" to me so much if I couldn't see it while I was preparing breakfast. I like the container so I will keep it, but I think it will go in the cupboard instead of on the counter for awhile and see if that helps. Little things - baby steps

It's great that you came to these boards. There are a lot of people here that can advise and inspire you.

I think the most important thing to remember is that it's going to take time. It took you 14 years to put on the weight, and I'm not saying that it will take another 14 to get it off but it certainly going to be longer than a month. Eating better is certainly a great first step. I would maybe consider not trying to change all of your eating habits at once, you don't want to give up out of frustration. When I wanted to lose weight I started with cutting out the soda too (that was a really hard one for me), then I added potatoes, then bread. If you end up at McDonalds, just get apples instead of fries.

If it's hard for to excercise, start slow. Walk for 10 minutes the first day and add a minute every day. Or if you have an ipod start a playlist with a couple of songs and add one every day to extend your walk.

Changing habits is hard but once you start doing it you'll won't want to stop!

I'm so excited for you!
