Hi, I read in the following link that Hatha yoga is good for Actors. Is this true? http://www.actorsyoga.com/actorsyoga.html I never did Yoga before but I am planning to do it very soon..... Since I am an aspiring actress i want to do the type that will benefit me most in my career. And according to the article in the link above it's Hatha yoga that's perfect for Actors. I know that all types of yoga are perfect for anybody but i want to be specific here please Any performers or actors here doing it? What about non-performers? How did you feel doing the Hatha yoga? Any other type of yoga is also good for Actors? Forgot to mention..... I used to be very energetic.... now i'm like a zombie .... hopefully the Hataa Yoga is the answer for me Thank you Edited by Cinematic 2006-10-03 6:04 PM

Expert Yogi Posts: 8442 | Cine - hatha yoga is wonderful, but it is not a clear description. It really means poses and breath and the qualifications vary greatly for teachers. Many recommend Iyengar or Anusara yoga as good places to start because they teach alignment, have well trained teachers and tend to be very safe. Definitely take some classes. You will find it increases your energy and you will get to know yourself better

If you used to be energetic and now you are a "zombie", look at your sleep patterns and especially your dietary patterns. Both of those can certainly affect energy levels. Break a leg! (on stage, not doing yoga! )

Hey Hollywood has been going to Bikram since the 70's! Here is a small list of the many. Martin Sheen Charlie Sheen Quicny Jones Selma Heyak Smother Bros Shirley Macclaine Raquel Welsh Too many to list. Yoga must be good in some aspect for actors!

I don't think Charlie Sheen is much of a role model - and he probably never would have made it as an actor if his father hadn't paved the way for him. Unless, of course, there is a new and improved Charlie Sheen I haven't heard about... (post drugs, post sex addict and prostitute customer, post pornography addict, post wife beater, post drunk driver, and post divorce # who knows how many...etc etc) (sorry, there is just something about him that I have never liked, even without all his great qualities)

oh, come on! Do you guys really take this topic seriously?

no, i really don't. But then I haven't wanted to be an actor since I was 16. I see what they go thru in all those acting classes and I couldn't do all that stuff. Being a good actor isn't easy, I think for most of us it would be embarrassing to show all those "feelings" that make a performance believeable. I couldn't do it, that is for sure, but I can appreciate seeing someone like Meryl Streep or Al Pacino, make me believe in what they are doing -( a younger Al Pacino, that is, as he has aged he's coming off kinda sleazy/slimy. )

I played a tree once in a school play. I hadn't started yoga yet so dont know if it helped, but my mum said i was wonderful.

I think it's fairly safe to assume if there's a bevy of hollywood's famous doing something it's best to avoid doing it alltogether. As a group they don't particularly posses a good track record. There are exceptions, just as there are exceptionally nice used car salesman and exceptionally honorable lawyers. To lemming or not to lemming. That is the question. There are some elements of the website mentioned that strike me as innacurate, to say the least. This, to me, raises credibility issues. And when those come up I look more deeply into a practitioners training. This site does not offer any real detail about the training and certification of the instructor. But you ask about yoga for actors or thespians, if you will. And there isn't a yoga that's specific to an occupation. that is to say there isn't a yoga "brand" that is mujtually inclusive with one career. You can, within the framework of yoga practice, carry the lessons over into your career. So there simply isn't a specific (as you ask). Hatha yoga is no more perfect for actors than Kundalini yoga (as an example only). And frankly the term "hatha" has come to mean that sort of yoga that involves the physical body and I'm guessing that Ashtanga, Iyengar, et al fall into the hatha yoga realm. There's no way to know how any one person will react and assimilate their yoga practice into their career. Two different actors in the same classes, all things being equal, may in fact reap dramatically different "benefit". Edited by purnayoga 2006-10-25 8:19 PM

Location: London, England | Hey there, Below is a paragraph on the alexander technique-postural training, so definitely a big overlap with hatha yoga. "F.M. Alexander (1869-1955), an actor who began his career as a Shakespearean orator, developed chronic laryngitis while performing. Determined to restore the full use of his voice, he carefully watched himself while speaking, and observed that undue muscular tension accounted for his vocal problem. He sought a way to eliminate that restriction. Over time, he discovered and articulated a principle that profoundly influences health and well-being: when neck tension is reduced, the head no longer compresses the spine and the spine is free to lengthen. Alexander restored his own natural capacity for ease by changing the way he thought while initiating an action. " Nick

Veteran Posts: 243 | I'm an actor and I find yoga is great- yoga increases awareness in the body and mind, the actor's tools on-stage. I don't know about the energy-to-find-a-character quoted in the article, but I do improvisation acting and feel that I'm more alert in my mind to respond and more alert and in control of what my body might want to do to take on a character or physical activity

Veteran Posts: 258 | According to the Stanislafski method of interpreting a role, one of the “techniques” to “grasp” the character/role that you have to interpret and to “get in his shoes” is also to imitate the posture of the character’s body. This is supposed to put you directly in the psychological condition of the role. I just wanted to point out the similarity of this Stanislafski acting method with the fact that asanas (=postures) are developing certain qualities inside you and each type of asanas has its different psychological impacts on you. It is always interesting to me to find out such similarities in the theories of different arts, different schools of thought, philosophies, religions and of coarse in Yoga. Kr

I'd have to say yoga is good for people, and since actors are people, I'd have to say yes, yes it is good for actors. No amount or specific yoga is going to make you a better actor. Maybe a better person, which could lead to better acting. Yoga is a mind/body/spirit connection that is meant to help one acheive a meditative state. I guess a less stressed person would be able act better (?). I don't know of any yoga "style" that has been built up around actors in general. It will sculpt your body with time and practice... I suppose this would make someone more visually atractive at a audition. Centering your mind on what you want out of life would probably help, and yoga can help that!

Cinematic - 2006-10-03 5:58 PM Hi, I read in the following link that Hatha yoga is good for Actors. Is this true? Any other type of yoga is also good for Actors? They do asanas and pranayamas in natya yoga, yes. But apart from these, there are a lot of physical & psychological practices that are included in natya yoga, and many elements are particularly done for actors.

yes. Very much. Yoga helps all other sports and arts to do well but no sports and arts helps Yoga. Keep reglar practice, you can see the change. Do postures... stay min 1 min in each positon.
