Subject: RE: New to Ashtanga

Ashtanga is a style of hatha yoga. Normally when studios offer a "Hatha class" it's a more general class where the postures do not come in a series and where there is not always vinyasa as there is in Ashtanga. Ashtanga is the most dynamic form of yoga and is very rigorous as you have probably discovered. In fact it's Raja yoga, "royal yoga" - because it constitutes a 'royal road' to happiness and fulfilment. Different types of Hatha yoga include Iyengar, Ashtanga, Kripalu, Integral, Viniyoga, etc...

There's more in depth info about Ashtanga here:

Also, remember that there's 8 branches to ashtanga and that asana is only one of them. No need to feel intimidated about anyone else, it's your practice you've got nothing to prove to anyone including yourself.

Enjoy your practice!
