I would imagine that I need to cut out the traditional 5 breaths in the downward dog position of the primary series?inorder to keep the flow going!

No, it develops strength and still keeps the blood flowing.

Hi there,
I think unless you went really fast through the sun salute, that would pick your heart rate up, but the best way is to actually slow down-instead of jumping fowards from down dog, if you were to lift properly so that you don't get from A to B as quickly as possible, this puts far more demand on the heart and therefore the cardio potential of the sun salute is made greater.
