Subject: Ashram in Rishikesh

Hello! I'm going to India in the middle of april and staying for a month. Really looking for a great ashram where I can stay 3 -4 weeks. My plan was to go to Sivananda in the Himlayas but they are unfortunately closed during this time. So I hope that somebody can give me some good ideas about where to go. Have been in the Sivananda ashram in Neyyar Dam two years ago, and looking for something kind of similar. Thanks Sofie

What do you want to do in Ashram exactly?

Contrary to the miunderstanding, there are very few or no Ashrams left in the world at the present. You have to choose the place, not because its name contains the word Ashram. It depends on what you want to do there. Shivananda Ashram is one of the few old style places you can see where you get some Yoga, some other things, and also many educated foreigners go there.

Best Luck.

Thanks for your reply Neel.

I'm looking for a place, where I can stay for a month and practise hatha or dynamic yoga every day, meditation and have the great veg food. I'm going to India to get a little bit peace of mind.
Yeah like I have experienced last year at Sivananda.
I really hope it's possible to find a place like that near Rishikesh or in the north some where...

sowo, that depends on your background and whether you are going alone, etc. The result depends on matching of your personality with the place, your background in terms of whether you can take noise, poverty, un-cleanliness, etc. Strong Hatha+Dynamic Yoga+ Meditation + Peace of Mind = all sounds interesting combo to me. If you can meet me in VA, I can know you and give you better advice. I can also connect you to certain places to try out before you actually commit.

If you want the peace of mind from me, I shall be going later than April. I sell the same peace of mind in VA, however!!!

Sowo~

I wouldn't discourage you from going to India to study yoga. But as Kulkarnn has pointed out ashrams as a place of spiritual learning and growth have diminished over the years, making it a little more difficult to find a true place of spiritual where one can find self-transformation and perhaps enlightenment.

I found one article online that offer decent guidance for finding an retreat or ashram in India. It clarifies some of the doubts one might have about the commercialism of yoga in India.

Also, if you plan to visit an ashram, I would suggest searching for a place that is "off the beaten path" because a lot of the well known locations in India have become centers for yogi tours as opposed to true spirituality.

Although times have changed, spirituality still exists and the yoga tradition lives strong, you just have to do some searching and dive into the experiences ahead with open-mindedness and joy!

Best of Luck and God-speed.

Recently I have visited an Anand Prakash Yoga Ashram founded by Yogi Vishvketu ji and Chetana Panwar In Rishikesh.
The ashram welcomes yoga practitioners who wish to reside at the ashram and take part in the daily yoga sadhana classes. I recommend a minimum stay of two weeks to derive benefit from the yoga lifestyle at the ashram, although they will accept requests for shorter stays. There are two yoga classes daily, three meals and time for journaling, contemplation and walks by the Ganges in the middle of the day.

Can anyone tell me about it?
