According to a new study, lack of vitamin D is the leading cause of cancer, and has links to a number of other diseases of the western world. You can get your daily dose of Vitamin D by getting about 10-15 minutes of direct, full body sunlight.

I like to get it by dropping a couple of 400 mg caps of VD -- after all, the Hatha Yoga Pradipika tells us not to practice in direct sunlight.

Hi there,
This is quite interesting:

"Prolonged exclusive breastfeeding without vitamin D supplementation is one of the most significant causes of the reemergence of rickets. Additional causes include extensive use of sunscreens and increased use of day-care, resulting in decreased outdoor activity and sun exposure among children"

So rickets is starting to make a comeback in the States-mainly those of african-american descent are affected at the moment. It's ironic that the recommendation of breastfeeding rather than bottle-feeding is one of the factors in the spread of this disease

My guess is that the breastfeeding would not even be considered an issue if people got outside now and then......

Hi Glenda,
True, but in many parts of the world, Uv radiation is cut right back due to seasonal changes, pollution, or whatever. To make it even more complex, apparently you are supposed to go out without sun block, and then after 15 minutes spread a load on.

I have to admit, I'm not one to use sunblock on a daily basis.. if I know I'll be outside for a long time (gardening, walking about, etc) I'll use it. So I'd imagine that I spend at least an hour/day outside- adding up all the minutes- without sunblock,.... can't be THAT bad, can it? I'm not out there at any particular time long enough to have any significant color..

I NEVER use any Sunblock lotions while working in the garden or when I'm working my hives.  If your working in and out of the shade, for short periods of time, it's quite healthy to be in the sunshine.  I consider short periods around 4-5 hours.  That's with rests in the shade.  Yea, I know what the experts say about sitting in the shade.  It's the direct sunlight that causes problems if you're not used to it and/or if your skin pigmentation is thin.  I'm blonde, blue eyed with fair skin, but can tan quite easily.  I spend so much time outdoors everyday to allow for my body to build up a resistence or natural immunity to 'bad' sun, if that's what you want to call it.  My thinking and belief is that persons who have bad reactions to the sun are ones that never get out and/or are always covered up either with clothes or chemicals.

On the other hand....if I"m riding the HD on long day trips or out west...most definitely I use a sunblock. I personally like to use Nature's Gate products.  It has extracts of Grapeseed, Wild Pansy and Coffee.  It's PABA free and water resistant.

Yeah, I am not much of a sunblock user either. On the water paddling for a couple of hours? Oh yeah. Otherwise, seek shade and use some common sense. The people who really live in high altitudes (Inuit or Eskimo) eat a LOT of fish so they get fish oil without having to take nasty tasting pills But until the research shows me that farmers and outdoor athletes NEVER get cancer etc., I am going to be looking for more research to back this up.

I meant to add something here.  One thing I do is I keep myself moisturized.  The sun can dry your skin and make it more suseptible to burning.

Recently I had a severe case of eczema due to unknown reasons.....it's gone now.  However, the skin care specialist that I went to, he specializes in Skin Cancer, but is also a dermatologist, recommended LOTS of sunshine for me.  He also told me to lay off all scented products (NO more Essential Oil baths for me) and use Aveeno products for sensitive skin - Fragrance Free.  Now that spring is here, my skin feels so dam great!!

I've pretty much been forced to go the suntan lotion route on most things. I REALLY hate it, but more than about an hour out in the sun, and I start burning pretty badly. To the best of my knowledge, I have NEVER tanned, just burned to various degress.

I also find this article interesting because I noticed a long time ago that sunny days make me happy, cloudy days leave me feeling a bit morose and gloomy. This is even when I'm indoors, and away from windows.

Uhhh....I need a reality check. What did I just see? Whatever it was, it is most disturbing and now I think I need therapy. Thanks, Nick.

I suppose looking in a mirror is against body-building principles?

Wasn't there a real-life scary person named leather-face? Was he a body-builder?

Excuse me while I hydrate my skin....

I just spent this past weekend with Body Builders - my husband included.  They have beautiful bodies, but these guys are naturally black in skin color, while husband is more olive color though.  It's the women I have a hard time with, however, if you look at some of their body shapes, some look pretty dam great, while some look totally strange.

Anyway, I think those tans are fake.  They look like they came from a bottle,

Hi Fifi,
I detect an undercurrent of desire in your words-sotly spoken, but still there The amazing thing is, these guys probably spend about two-three hours a day doing nothing but look at themselves in a mirror

I have a similar reaction, I don't think it's natural. I like women who are in shape. One of our local instructors is in incredible shape, and you can see the definition in her muscles. I have no doubt that she works very hard on her asanas, you can see the results. So I don't think it's the muscles, I think it's the unnatural development of those muscles that bother me. I think most, if not all, of these women are taking some sort of steriods, and you can see it much clearer than you can with the men.
