Subject: couple of old injuries

ok, so a few years ago (10 years), i was doing the eagle, and i injured my left shoulder. I couldnt do bench press or shoulder press for a while afterward. Well, i could it would just ache for after a while. Now i can do bench press but no shoulder press. I have 100% mobility in this joint. I made an inquery on an acupuncture forum to see if acupuncture would help. IN hte most concise post i have ever seen, I was told to exercise teh mid/lower traps and the serattus anterior. I could do this with weights, but i want to use this as an opportunity to segue into a more yoga-based exercise.

another injury came from the lotus pose. In LOY it says there would be a period of discomfort in the knees, so i really went for it. so when i was done, i had injured the lateral side of my right knee. I guess i stretched the lateral collateral ligament? i dunno. now 6 years later, i still sometimes have sharp pain in my knees in that area. again i have 100% movement in that joint. The guy on the other forum said to strengthen the glutes, which i guess the warrrior 3 works, the TFL, which side bridges work, and, the calves, which i have no idea how to really impact with yoga. Again, i could use weights for all of these, but i really want to learn how to solve my health problems with yoga.

Any suggestions?

Suggestion: Contact a person who has:

Yoga, Weightlifting, Anatomy background.

I wish you luck if you are trying to find it free or less expensive.

Hi Brandon,

Yoga asanas are really more holistic than that and while certain asana may work specific muscle groups more than others, generally we should ensure that our practise balances the whole body rather than focusing one specific area.

With regards to lotus, NEVER NEVER NEVER force the knees (as you have discovered). It's true that we may experience a level of discomfort in the knees while in lotus, though the opening comes from the hips. This is one pose that even practised daily takes a long time to master....

I imagine that yoga can still be used as physical therapy for injuries on the muscles/tendons.

Yes, definately, though under the supervision of an experienced teacher.

go to a teacher, and stop injuring yourself

even if you go to a teacher, the teacher might encourage you to do an asana that you're not quite prepared for, so

heal thyself

and

more than the rest

KNOW thyself

stop taking other's word for it.

Don't hurt yourself.

that is good advice, not to hurt myself, but these are old injuries, back from days where i was less patient. I do plan to go to a teacher here in 5 weeks after i graduate. I want to work on my basics.

Thanks for all the help.

I've got my share of injuries as well.

We learn to live with them, and not make them any worse.

Once the damage is done, though, unless you want surgery, you might do well to visit someone who has been there and done that.

Yogi Dharma Mittra, he wrote about a knee problem that he 'fixed'

you might want to seek him out.

He's got the goods.

Me, I've got some avenues in my body that I don't go down any longer because of the injuries that I've sustained, and quite a few came before I ever knew about Yoga.

It's one thing to find a teacher who knows yoga well.

It's another to find a teacher who can see you and know what yoga is appropriate for YOU.

Can you recommend somebody in the San Fran East Bay? not Berkeley, but further inland, like Walnut Creek?

Thanks in advance
