Subject: Teacher Training in California

Since a lot of yoga teacher trainings don't go deep into the spiritual aspects of yoga, I wanted to share this:

Ananda Yoga Teacher Training (at The Expanding Light in Northern California)

July 1 - 29, 2007
Oct 28 - Nov 25, 2007
(Plus more in 2008)

Along with being RYT-200, a major selling point of this course is that it teaches the spiritual side of yoga along with the asanas and everything else.

A number of friends have gone through it, and they tend to say it is:

  • intense (at least if you take it all at once)

  • self-transforming; you get a lot out of it

There is a sample schedule that covers all the topics in the course -- you can see that there are courses on the Yoga Sutras and the chakras, along with many courses in anatomy, physiology, asanas, and so on.

If you learn the asanas, you have something; if you know the physical benefits of the asanas, you have more; and if you know how each asana effects your mental state, and in what way, and how it helps with your spiritual growth, you have much.

Then, if you know how to meditate afterwards, you have everything!

Disclaimer: I'm involved with the course, tangentially. So I'm biased -- hope it is still okay to share it. But I do recommend it.

Has anyone else taken it and have experience with it?

Hi Nabha,

I don't have experience of the course but do have experience with Ananda and I think they are an excellent organisation and Swami Kriyananda a lovely man.

One of the benefits of taking the training you mention is that it teaches Paramahansa Yogananda's energising exercises which are a wonderful way to start either your Yoga practise or your day.

Hi Jonathon,

Yes, I quite agree! Yogananda's energization exercises were his "unique contribution" to yoga. They've taken me a while to get comfortable with, but I find them helpful, too.

By the way, your signature is great. One of my favorite quotes!
