Subject: Masculinity and Your Health

Hey Guys,

I'm doing research at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign on how masculinity interacts with our health.

I'm currently conducting an online study on the interaction between masculinity, depression, and attitudes towards seeking professional psychological consultation, which I encourage you all to participate in:

http://www.web-research-design.net/cgi-bin/faceprime/hammer_sp.pl
Note: the question repeat is part of the design

Once the program analyzes your responses, you will see how your scores on masculinity and other related variables compare to other men who have taken the test. (by the way, the whole thing is completely anonymous)

The test takes about 5-10 minutes.

I appreciate your help in strengthening the science of masculinity!

Peace,
Joe Hammer

The score for your overall level of conformity to traditional American masculine norms is 11, which is lower than 26, the score of the average American male.

You are just as likely as the average American male to be open to seeking professional psychological help.

Your level of depression, as measured by this survey's depression test, indicated that you most likely do not have depression. This page has a list of helpful references in case you are interested in learning more about depression.

I scored 11 as well.

So I'm as manly as Steve but far less manly than Rick and Greenjello and way way less manly than the average American man

Lucky I'm English then

Hmm. Answered a load of questions and then it went back to the beginning... Whats up with that? Does it not work with Firefox or did I miss something?

http://www.ofuzi.com/2007/05/28/no-sex-tonight/?

thought that this would be an appropriate place to show this 'joke' LOLZ

I never quite figured out why the sexual urge of men and women differ so
much. And I never have figured out the whole Venus and Mars thing. I have
never figured out why men think with their head and women with their heart.

FOR EXAMPLE: One evening last week, my girlfriend and I were getting into
bed.

Well, the passion starts to heat up, and she eventually says “I don’t feel
like it, I just want you to hold me.”

I said “WHAT??!! What was that?!”

So she says the words that every boyfriend on the planet dreads to hear…
“You’re just not in touch with my emotional needs as a woman enough for me
to satisfy your physical needs as a man.” She responded to my puzzled look
by saying, “Can’t you just love me for who I am and not what I do for you in
the bedroom?”

Realizing that nothing was going to happen that night, I went to sleep.

The very next day I opted to take the day off of work to spend time with
her. We went out to a nice lunch and then went shopping at a big, big
unnamed department store. I walked around with her while she tried on
several different very expensive outfits. She couldn’t decide which one to
take so I told her we’d just buy them all. She wanted new shoes to
compliment her new clothes, so I said lets get a pair for each outfit. We
went onto the jewelry department where she picked out a pair of diamond
earrings. Let me tell you…she was so excited. She must have thought I was
one wave short of a shipwreck. I started to think she was testing me because
she asked for a tennis bracelet when she doesn’t even know how to play
tennis. I think I threw her for a loop when I said, “That’s fine, honey.”
She was almost nearing sexual satisfaction from all of the excitement.
Smiling with excited anticipation she finally said, “I think this is all
dear, let’s go to the cashier.”

I could hardly contain myself when I blurted out, “No honey, I don’t feel
like it.”

Her face just went completely blank as her jaw dropped with a baffled
WHAT?”

I then said “honey! I just want you to HOLD this stuff for a while. You’re
just not in touch with my financial needs as a man enough for me to satisfy
your shopping needs as a woman.” And just when she had this look like she
was going to kill me, I added, “Why can’t you just love me for who I am and
not for the things I buy you?”

Apparently I’m not having sex tonight either.

It's a shame we're so conditioned by advertising to constantly want stuff we don't need... we could save our money for things like medical emergencies and mortages, rather than going into debt like so many people are doing now.

Does being a man require us to avoid anything that reeks of femininity, like being comfortable with a range of emotions and knowing what intimacy feels like apart from sexuality? Do we stand to benefit as men by rethinking what society tells us about what it is to be a real man? Depends on who you ask, I suppose.

Hello Joe (et al)

{sidebar} I got a 12 hehehehe

There is a difference, in the yogic context, between male and female and masculine and feminine. However society at-large doesn't have this awareness and it did not seem as though the likert scale had it either. :-)

Good joke, but one part bothers me.

SCThornley - 2007-06-18 9:35 AM

I never quite figured out why the sexual urge of men and women differ so
much.

It's been my experience that the sexual urge varies more on a genetic level, rather than a sex level. Thus there are women with stronger drives than their men, and vis versa. To much of a mis-match, and there is going to be trouble.
