This one-day workshop will give you an experience of some yoga fundamentals and a simple practice to try at home that is tailored to your physical condition. It will also encourage you to start a gym routine if you do not already have one and provide some tips on how to get maximum benefit from your gym workouts.

Yoga is a great tool to increase our range of motion, build core strength, increase breath capacity, improve circulation, relieve and manage stress, improve mental clarity, and increase our sense of peace and equanimity. The workshop is suitable for those with no yoga experience, or for those who have some experience with it and are interested in making it more a part of their routine.

The gym is where you work out. Yoga is where you work in; where you integrate your mind, body, and spirit. Both practices celebrate what we are doing - living life! And both practices significantly increase the quality of our life.

Steve Rooney was the first graduate of The Breathing Project's Advanced Studies Program. He has studied extensively with Zack Kurland and Leslie Kaminoff, and has participated in numerous workshops led by T.K.V. Desikachar, Kausthub Desikachar, Menakar Desikachar, and Mark Whitwell. For the past year he has been a student of Gary and Mirka Kraftsow in the American Viniyoga Institute's highly-respected Teacher Training Program. Steve teaches regularly on Saturday mornings at The Breathing Project.

“In July 2001 I was 51, out of shape, and just diagnosed with my second cancer. Now I am 57 and fitter than I've ever been. It was simple:

1. Go to the gym 2-3 times a week for cardio and weight work-outs.
2. Learn yoga and do it at home almost every day.

I have a fulltime office job as Chief Financial Officer. Yet I bound up stairs and have a resting pulse in the low 50s. You can, too! Let's do it!”

Hi Steve,
I am also a Yoga teacher with a day job as a CFO and a resting pulse in the low 50's. Glad to see that there are others!
Namaste,
Jim

Dear Jim,
Good to know we CFO yogis are not alone! I shall email a private to you. For all you others - if CFO's can do it then perhaps this yoga stuff is somewhat useful!
Best,
Steve

Phil Ashton's article posted on the site this month about yoga for men is spot-on. Aren't the differences between men and women so fascinating? I was blessed by discovering the benefits of yoga when I was 20 years old. It was 1970 and I was a full-blown hippie - open as could be.

Then I went into workaholic self-care hibernation for 25 years (1976-2001) - no disciplined self-work at all - but re-emerged due to my second cancer, in summer 2001. Since then I have been a dedicated yogi and gym bum. Leslie Kaminoff and Zack Kurland gave me my 200 hour training completed three years ago and I finish in December with my 500 hour training with Gary and Mirka Kraftsow. Not to mention hundreds of hours with them and the Desikachars, Mark Whitwell, and others. How lovely it has been.

But I see how low the male percentage is in our field - both the teachers and the students. In my current Kraftsow 500 hour training I am one of two male students versus 30 females. What gives? There are many reasons - the history of yoga in North America, the male tendencies Phil speaks of, etc.

So when Edya (who helps run The Breathing Project) suggested I offer a workshop to introduce yoga to men, I jumped at it. And to kick it up a notch, I have made it the final project for mv Kraftsow training. It is terrific how that training has infomed this! To increase its impact, all participants get a free private with me to help them develop a personal practice for their particular needs.

Please let your friends know - we still have space - but it is almost here! Sunday September 16. See my original post for how to enroll. Email me here with any questions!

Best,
Steve
