Subject: Pulled hamstirng - Practice???

On Sunday I pulled my hamstring playing softball (In the middle, between the butt and the knee). Nothing too crazy but it is causing me to limp just a pinch and I definitely can't run full speed.

I'm wondering how long I should put off my Yoga practice to let it heal?

Or should I go and just be mindful of it an not exert myself too hard?

Hi Brian,

All the standing poses will place stress on your hamstrings (even tadasana if you do it properly ).

My advise is to rest until you feel better then begin to introduce seated poses, gradually working to standing poses with time.

I answered this on the "other" board in which you posted.

Yeouch. When I began practicing yoga I overstretched my hamstring. Every so often, my body remembers the injury and gives me plenty of warning bells and signals to tell me to ease off. Yoga can definitely help you to heal - but as I stated above - it can cause or amplify further injury.

As Jonathon described - standing poses will stress the hamstring. When you are ready to reintroduce length into the muscle - I suggest laying on you back in supine position.

Here is a great description of a supine, hamstring stretch.
