Subject: Christmas/New Year retreat ?

I'm stuck in Paris this summer and the weather has been so bad I'm thinking of going to somewhere nice and sunny for Christmas. So I've been looking for a yoga retreat for that period, preferably ashtanga or flow, but would also consider other yoga styles.
Unfortunately, at that time of the year airfares are really expensive, so it excludes some locations, being based in Europe... (Even going to Thailand is really pricey at that time of the year; otherwise I would have considered this centre: http://www.yoga-thailand.com/)

The most interesting I've found so far is a retreat near Goa in India with Lara Baumann.
http://www.infohub.com/vacation_packages/10017.html
http://www.larayoga.com/
Her style is called "quantum yoga" and is more or less ashtanga-based, but not only. She lives in London (her studio is called OmStation3).
I'm wondering if any one could give any feedback on her teaching or could comment on this yoga centre in Goa: http://www.bhaktikutir.com

Also, if anyone knows of other new year retreats, I'd love to hear about them ! Thanks.

My suggestion is: Forget about restricting yourself to Retreat Concept and consider other possibilities. You can rent a beautiful place in a beautiful place with a good teacher around and enjoy the social life in

India, Thialand, or wherever.

As for airfares, they are high only for the weeks of Christmas. After that they go down.

No, It's Karma Yoga.

Far more spiritually fulfilling at Christmas if someone has the time to spare.

I won't be asking you where the best place to ski is this winter.

You'll have me cleaning kennels for St. Bernards!

Eric, they say sarcasm is the lowest form of wit.

Please do 108 sun salutations as a punishment

lol ! Thanks for your contributions
Volunteering is a great idea; I've done it here in Paris over the last 3 years, punctually for fund raising operations and at Christmas time: helping with organising the event and celebrating Christmas with aged and homeless people. It is definitely a worthwhile experience for the volunteers (especially last year, I enrolled a group of friends in and we had a fairly good time), putting your own situation into perspective and trying to bring a bit of warmth to people who are in hardship or lonely.
You cannot really feel completely satisfied with yourself though, knowing the appalling conditions they live in the rest of the year. Real engagement would be on a weekly basis, but not a lot of us are available enough for that.
Of course, it still is a much more meaningful way of celebrating the Christmas season than just consuming and partying (I do enough of that the rest of the year ! ). So if my reasonable self decides that it is not worth spending all that money just to take a holiday in the middle of peak season, I'll definitely go for it again (but sometimes, you know, you just need to escape... argh choices ! )

Hi Delphine,

I haven't heaed of the center you mention (in your orginal post), though a excellent resource for 'authorized' Ashtanga workshops is:

http://www.ashtanga.com

It's worth checking in with them regularly...

Jonnie,
thanks for the tip, I went to this site a while ago then forgot about it

There is a practitioner intensive in Thailand in January with Petri Raisanen which looks extremely tempting: http://www.petriraisanen.com/thailand/index.asp
It takes place just after the new year, when the airfares are low again (and would allow me to do volunteer work over Christmas too )
I'll definitely keep that option in mind, thank you !

So it's win/win for everyone then.

I just have to organise Eric's skiing trip for him and then I can take the rest of the week off
