Subject: neti pot assistance

Namaste,

For all my life I have had allergies. Although medication does work, I have wanted to use more holistic approaches. Yesterday, I used a neti pot with a warm, saline solution. It did not burn my sinuses and felt rather good. Since the treatment, my sneezing and sinus drainage has increased dramatically (worse than before the neti treatement). Also eustation tubes are sore and tender.

I have not repeated the treatment realizing my body is screaming something. I am not sure if my body is saying "neti is not for this body" or if this is just the first step in cleansing the sinuses.

Assistance is appreciated!

Namaskar,
Holly

Hello Holly,

With the information you provide it is not possible to advise you.
You will need to outline the following please:

At what concentration are you mixing the solution.
What type of salt are you using
What temperature is the waater you are using
what vessel are you using for the neti
what proceedure are you practicing before the wash and after

With this information I can direct you further. without it, I cannot.

Hi Holly,
I echo the above questions. Also, did you get any training before starting Jala Neti and do you do all three stages?

1 Nostril to nostril
2 Nose to mouth
3 Mouth to nose

The following link is where I get my neti products from. I've listed it here as they have extensive material on how to Neti correctly.

http://www.shopneti.co.uk/index.php?referrer=Shopholistic

I have practised stage 1 for some time now and find it's helped my chronic sinusitis a lot. I was born with a tendency toward this condition and have had two lots of surgery on my face to try and improve matters so I know how miserable this condition is to live with.

From what you say, I suspect that you may not have dried thouroughly/correctly enough and/or were starting a sinus/eustacian tube infection that's now blowing up a little. I've found Neti has not got rid of my infections totally but it does seem to have increased the time between bouts and decreased the time infections hang around for.

I'm told that stages 2 and 3 are needed for effective Eustacian tube draining but should not be practised without expert tuition which is why I don't do them currently. As Eustacian tube infections are what bug me most these days, and give me tinnitus, I am impatient with waiting for my former Sivananda teacher and swami to resume teaching as he's the only person here I know who is qualified to teach me further.

Regarding the holistic approach. I've always found traditional steam inhalation with appropriate essential oils more effective for a bad infection than drugs. I also have a little plastic gizmo that I insert oil-impregnated pads into that plugs into an electric socket. I run this at night as I find it helps stop infections taking hold quite so visciously if I do it early enough. I think it helps to break the inflammation - blockage - more inflammation viscious circle.

===> Wrong. Medication does not work. Therefore, you are seeking other methods.

Yesterday, I used a neti pot with a warm, saline solution. It did not burn my sinuses and felt rather good. Since the treatment, my sneezing and sinus drainage has increased dramatically (worse than before the neti treatement). Also eustation tubes are sore and tender.
===> Immediately, stop the Neti.

I have not repeated the treatment realizing my body is screaming something. I am not sure if my body is saying "neti is not for this body" or if this is just the first step in cleansing the sinuses.
===> Net is NOT for any body which is already having swollen sinuses. It is ONLY for the body which does not already have sinus problem. Is not that interesting?

Assistance is appreciated!

===> See me if you are in VA.

Namaskar,
Holly

Holly,
are you going to answer the questions? Without that information, it is impossible to guide you accurately.

As for allergies, I meant to mention earlier that I found acupuncture to be amazingly effective as compared with antihistamines and the like.

Regards,

Fiona

Fiona,

Based on comments here and other research, the neti pot treatment will probably not work for me. Due to having damp sinuses for most of my life, adding more moisture doesn't seem to be a trick.

As for food, I have restricted my diet and changed my eating habits. I haven't noticed much of a difference. However, since allergies tend to be caused mostly by stress (symptoms of allergies increase as the effects of stress increases), I have taken strides in this arena through breath work, yoga, meditation, and energy work. Relieving stress, more than anything else, has drastically reduced my allergies.

The neti pot experience was an experiment. I will continue to look at other methods like acupnuncture.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi Holly,
thanks for getting back to this thread.

To give you my own experience :

I developed hayfever at 18. Within 3 years, I had a full-blown allergy to grass, nettles and plantain. My skin would weal, the insides of my ears, the roof of my mouth, my eyes, and my skin would all itch. I would get sneezing fits that lasted 20-30 sneezes at a time and be so violent and sudden that I hit my head several times from them. I also got allergy-related asthma. I got symptoms from March to October most years as my allergies followed grass-cutting season. I couldn't visit anywhere with grass as walking across a lawn used to make my skin blister.

My doctor had me on 10 of the 2-a-day antihistamines a day, a steroid nasal spray that wrecked my membranes, and an asthma inhaler. I'd take the last pair of tablets at midnight. I'd have my symptoms back by 3am!

Cutting dairy didn't help in my case. Neither did desensitising injections.

I eventually told my GP that I was concerned that if the allergies didn't kill me, the amount of drugs would. I expected him to refer me to a specialist hospital in London. Instead, he asked me if I'd ever considered acupuncture. I told him I'd try wearing a kipper around my neck if I thought it would help!

The following season, I went to the surgery as soon as my symtoms started showing. He gave me acupuncture. I repeated treatment about every 2-4 weeks depending on symtom severity. I used 6 tablets, total that entire season !!!

I'm now 43. I still get symptoms but most of the time its just a dose of the sniffles. I still carry an inhaler as airborne pollutants can trigger an attack (e.g. emptying the vacuum, cutting the lawn). Mostly though, a quick booster treatment at the beginning of the season is all I need.

A lot of my GP's patients no longer have any symptoms. That is, acupuncture actually cured them.

I asked my GP who he trained with. He told me the British Medical Association!!! This is the regulatory body for medicine in the UK and the term ultra conservative would not be incorrect when describing this body.

I've learned subsequently that research conducted at one of the big teaching hospitals in London has verified that acupuncture is beneficial for allergy and chronic pain conditions but not for assisting people to give up smoking. Thus, I didn't even have to pay for my treatment as I got it free on the NHS.

Fee,

Thanks for the letting me know your story. It helps me a great deal. I have had one acupuncture treatment from a friend of mine (he's been practicing for over 20 years). I was symptom free for over 2 weeks! Now, I'm just saving up to begin the treatments.

Thanks again!
Holly
