| there is something close to 1000 asanas, but how many of them are really necessary, isnt there a much shorter list of how to maximize your time on the matt rather then learning 1000 poses? In the old days did they have that many poses or have we made some up?
thanks

| it is often said that it can take a lifetime to learn a single pose--so i don't think it matters if you learn 1000 or if you learn 1--what does matter is the intention behind learning them. |

| TS - I suppose you need as many as you need. When you have a deep understanding of the effect of each pose on your entire self, you will probably know which you "need" to do and which you can leave out |

Location: Upstate NY | Om Namah Sivaya TS, Actually according to scripture there are 8,400,000 different asanas, of those H.H. Sri Swami Sivananda recommends that one needs to incorporate about 84 asanas to their daily practice and of those 84, one should master 12.......... - Headstand (Sirshasana)
- Shoulderstand (Sarvangasana)
- Plough (Halasana)
- Fish (Matsyasana)
- Forward bend (Paschimothanasana)
- Cobra (Bhujangasana)
- Locust (Shalabhasana)
- Bow (Dhanurasana)
- Spinal twist (Ardha Matsyendrasana)
- Crow pose (Kakasana) or Peacock pose (Mayurasana)
- Standing forward bend (Pada Hasthasana)
- Triangle (Trikonasana)
hope this helps..... Mucho Metta, Ravi

I'm now no longer impressed by Dharma Mittra's 908 asanas poster
Next time I see him, I'll say "you might be able to do a no hands headstand, but your asana poster is about 8,399,092 asanas short"

| I can appreciate this list.
Note all these (-cobra) appear in the first two series of Ashtanga yoga too.

| Thanks Ravi, just as long as you know that I'm joking
To me, Dharma Mittra demonstrates the qualities of a true Yogi and is certainly a role model for myself.
Apparently is a great sense of humour as well
