Subject: Help me!!!

Everything has been going so well in my life lately, so of course... I got hurt. My right foot has given up on me, and I've been ordered to rest the foot. I've already rested it for two weeks, on Wednesday I'm going back to the doctor and we'll see what he says.

I've done the asanas I can think of that doesn't put any weight on the righ foot, but I can't find a good routine that get the prana through the whole body. What I feel is most important is to keep my hips open and happy, because if the are allowed to stiffen up the pain will return.

I can not flex the foot "sideways" (like you do when you put your foot in Lotus), if you know what I mean. I can flex the foot up without any problem, and I can point it fairly well.

For example;
Virasana puts to much pressure on the ancle.
Adho Mukha Svanasana is no problem.
Vira 1-3 can't be done.

Any ideas for a say 45-60 minute routin that keeps my hips and the rest of my body open and flowing until I can get back to my normal asana practice?

I would be SO thankful if you guys could help me!

/Jenny - limping and bored...

Hi Jenny,
So what's up with your right foot? From your lotus description, sounds like you sprained the ligaments on the lateral side of the ankle?

Lateral side? Is that the outside or inside of the foot? Becuase the pain is on the inside, on the left side of the right foot.

I haven't sprained or twisted my foot, I haven't done anything out of the ordinary the last couple of weeks.

I don't know if this pictures provides any clues, all you can see is that there's something on the inside of the right foot that's not on the left one, and it's from that "bump" that the pain comes and goes out on top of the foot and down towards the heel.

Hi Jenny,
Thanks for the pic. Well, the location looks like the point where what's called the inferior extensor retinaculum passes over the tendon of a muscle called tibialis anterior. here's a link:

http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://mywebpages.comcast.net/wnor/lateralankle.jpg&imgrefurl=http://mywebpages.comcast.net/wnor/ankle.htm&h=428&w=542&sz=26&hl=en&start=2&tbnid=1Er9Zw2QZB1DoM:&tbnh=104&tbnw=132&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dinferior%2Bextensor%2Bretinaculum%26gbv%3D2%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DG.

Sorry, don't know how to compress those urls
Could it be some kind of tendonitis of the the tibialis anterior tendon? Or tightness of that muscle causing the tendon to rub on the retinaculum (same as carpal tunnel syndrome)?
Or have I got the wrong point?

If you're fast you can remove the link, I've saved it.

I don't know if you're right or not, I know nothing about this stuff. We'll see what the doc says on Wednesday.

Hi Jenny,

Do you have any Yoga reference books (Light on Yoga for example). It will be easier to recommend asanas that way.

If not, then PM me a fax number and I'll fax through a routine for you with little stick people.

Hi Jenny,
Been mulling over what is going on with your foot. I noticed you said that it hurts when you supinate your foot to put it in lotus. Really, the foot shouldn't supinate. It should be pointed (which, anatomically, is called plantarflexion). When the foot supinates, hip flexibility is not improved-instead, the ligaments on the outside of the ankle are stretched, which can be a disaster, and the knee ligaments are also at great risk of injury.

Hi ZB
Well, thr thing is to take the foot out of the equation-both felexion and extension do rhis-as long as the foot is not allowed to supinate

What does supinate mean?

By the way... I really shouldn't have used Lotus as an example since I don't even to half Lotus. Forgive me for causing confusion there.

Hi Jenny,
Supination? It's exciting stuff-well if you are me, it's exciting stuff-normal people fall off the chair with boredom Both the hand and foot do supination-when you turn the palm of your hand towards the ceiling, that's supination. In the foot, it's a combination of three movements-plantarflexion, inversion, and adduction-the same position you described in half lotus.

I don't have that many books, but I'll see what I have when I get home.

I think my uncle have a fax machine, I'll ask him about the number and then I'll send you a PM!

nick:

true enough.

on thinking on it (and observing a lot of folks over the years), a lot of them do supinate when doing lotus. it's one of many 'errors' that i see in common pictures of the posture. i find that flexing is 'easier' or more active and thus helps maintain the alignment of the foot, ankle, etc.

but, we all have preferences.

Yes, I can do lotus if I cheat, by letting my ankles roll in, Id sooner not do it, I feel as if I am compensating for lack of rotation of hip.

cheating is bad, m'kay?

modify to get the right opening, but cheating just leads to injury!
