Subject: Back pain with Tittibhasana

I have recently began learning tittibhasana or firefly pose and I have noticed after practice my lower back hurts. Is there something I may be doing incorrectly or any tips on this pose. Thanks for you help..

Hi Michelle,
Sounds like you are allowing the lumbar spine to lose it's curvature, and letting it flex. When we lift a heavy box off the floor, we are told to keep the lower back curve, and not to let the spine 'round' (spinal flexion). Spinal flexion stresses the ligamnets and can cause disc herniation, and various other types of damage.
Obviously, it is impossible for the spine not to flex in tittibhasana, but try to 'rein it in a bit', rather than accentuate the curve. Just backing off slightly will dramatically improve the spine's safety, and will also force you to search for more flexibility in your hips, and greater strength in your shoulders-so you actually get more out of the pose by sparing the spine.
Hope that helps.
Nick

you could also opt to not practice this pose for a while, and either learn it at a workshop with SR or someone, or pick it up later when you know more about your body in regards to that posture.

also, study it from a book with clear instructions like Iyengar's Light on Yoga. very good book for learning about crazy poses.
