Subject: help removing mat coating

Hi,
I've been doing yoga for a couple of years now and recently got a friend to begin doing it with me. She asked one day if she could buy the mat I had from me, and I said sure and bought a new one for myself.

Anyway, the mat is soo slippery! I washed it with soap and water, let it dry..still slippery. I rinsed it with water, still slippery, and I rubbed it with vinegar to try and dissolve the coating, still I'm sliding off the mat. Is there something wrong with this UN sticky mat? Are there any methods I haven't tried yet? Or should I just get a different mat altogether?
Thanks for any help.

Which mat is it?

You can try Dr. Bronner's liquid soap. That stuff peels the grease off a bumper hitch.
But it is likely the mat is as the mat is and while it may off gas whatever they've coated it with (over time) it may not be removed immediately in any manual fashion.

it's a pink foam sticky mat...I think it's made of pvc

I'm a senior in college right now and I'd really like to have a good mat that isn't terribly expensive since I have to spend so much money on my education as it is haha

Gordon - don't you usually promote the use of vodka for mat cleaning? That might be the best for such a problem. And a college student should have access to it Other than that, you just have to use it and sweat on it. You might try putting it somewhere that you can walk on it a lot (but not get it really dirty) during your day. Perhaps regular use and a bit of house dust will calm it down?

I remember my very first mat. No one told me about the coating, but I figured something was amiss in the first adho mukha. I felt so embarrassed I almost left (silly, I know). At least the rest of the class had a nice laugh that night.

If possible, you might want to let it catch some sun.

And please stop wasting your vodka

Try Simple Green and a green scouring pad, should help...

Wipe it with a wet wipe and then leave it out in the sun. That worked for me. Anything with a little oil in it will help break down that coating (i.e. from your hands and feet over time). There are mat cleaning/non-slip solutions you can buy with orange oil in them.

Most mats are slippery when you first get them; they have to be broken in like a cast iron pan.
