Subject: Pain around the 1st metatarsal

I recently developed pain around the 1st metatarsal of my right foot. The pain was acute, and oddly resembled the pain one experiences from stepping on a nail. Kind of a torn tissue sensation. It is aggravated with asana practice that involves extending the big toe, as with the rear leg when lunging.

I am resting it completely and am near full recovery. Has anyone experienced this? Are there any common causes (ie improper form and/or improper transitioning) of this type of injury from asana practice?

*I added an image to illustrate the location of the pain.

Thank you in advance for any response!

Hopper,

What you describe sounds like a nerve issue which is actually between the metatarsals.
My guess is Morton's Neuroma. It's quite tricky to deal with.

Thanks for the response purna. I looked into that, but the location of the pain is inconsistent with Morton's.

I should have been more diligent when highlighting the image i posted. The pain actually leans to the outside of the first metatarsal. It is definitely not on the inside between the 1st and 2nd metatarsals.

I surfed yesterday, which brought back a faint recollection of smashing that part of my foot on a reef after a less than graceful dismount of my surfboard a couple of weeks ago. I think it is more than likely a bone bruise, or some soft tissue injury of the turf-toe type.

Anyway, it is healing much faster than I anticipated. I plan a light asana practice later this morning to see how it responds.

Aloha, and thanks again for the reply.
