Is there anything special about back bends (e. g., "camel" and "baby wheel" Urdhva Dhanurasana.)?

I find that when I do a good back bend, I really get some sort of a rush, and the better that camel (ustrasana) goes, the better the rest of the day goes.

(I put these photos for descriptions; no I don't look nearly this good!)

backbends are naturally invigorating.
i don't have the chops to comment on energetics, but they open up the chest girdle, and counteract the effects of hunched shoulders.
...
when you do them right, i suppose.
i've been doing backbends very poorly for a long time.
certainly i've been going deep, but i always ended up with a headache.
so i was going deep in the wrong direction.
...
i'll pass this off to someone better qualified to answer it now, but yeah, backbends are quite a rush.

Ah, "hunched shoulders". Yep, that is a problem of mine.

(In part, brought on by too many bench presses in my past)

Hey Ollie:

1. Send your own pictures. (I told you not to look at women except your own!!!)

2. Backbends when done properly are fantastic.

I like back bends. When I've been out on the bike for a while I like to do one when I stop at a stoplight. I just grab the handles, and lean backwards.

Moving the spine into the front body represents coming into the moment (or out of the past, if you will). It draws us away from that which is behind us. It brings us toward the willingness to grow, change and transform. Backbends also prepare the body for pranayama by opening the anterior spine, the rib cage (intercostals), and the throat.

Obviously it opens the heart center for our exploration of love (of Self, others, planet), frees the pelvis by contracting the hip flexors in a lengthened position, and releases anger, typically stored in the armpits.

But "no" there's nothing special about them.

Hey Ollie:

1. Send your own pictures.

You'll regret saying that. I do have a digital project planned along those lines; sort of "here are my asanas now, then check back in a couple of years or so to see if there is a difference.

So, if I do more practice with my teacher, I'll have to keep my eyes closed?

I suppose that might add a challenge to some of the one legged balances.
