Expert Yogi Posts: 8442 | Clackcing away on a kiosk keyboard... I don't know if I mentioned it, but we are on our way to Las Vegas for a few days! There is a big ballroom competition there as well as some wonderful friends we have not seen for 20 or so years. We're going to two nights of the comp., dinner at Mario Batali's, and with any luck, at least one Cirque show (they are mostly on hiatus this week) and maybe, see Mamma Mia, plus visiting these friends, going to their club for an all you can eat shrimp night and, and, and.... I guess I'll have to chuck a quater in a machine because we are there, but frankly, I keep forgetting that people go there to gamble I'll probably be online a couple of times, but if I don't stay to chat, you'll know we're on our way to do more stuff!

Expert Yogi Posts: 8442 | My oh my what a trip! We did a LOT o' stuff in those few days. Our friends were just as excited to see us as we were to see them - maybe more. Actually, I describe the trip as loud, sometimes obnoxious, over-the-top and a little crazy. And that is just our good friend, Chris! No shrimp, but an amazing dinner, no Cirque or Mama Mia, but plenty of entertainment, no gambling, but plenty of money left behind. We don't compete, so yes, we watched the comp and our friends came along one night. For anyone who watches Dancing with the Stars, we saw Jonathon Roberts (aka Marie Osmond's partner. Not dancing, though), his wife, Anna Trebunskaya (partner of Albert Reed - male model - the "Elvis" guy. Anna did compete), from So You Think You Can Dance, we saw Pasha and Mary Murphy (it is her competition) who seriously, if she has a stylist, needs to get a new one We also went out to Lake Mead, which is desperately shrinking. I am not sure why they continue to let the city grow when there is clearly a water supply problem. We went to the Hoover Dam, which is dam impressive, especially when you think of how long ago it was built. It has a fab art deco look. Saw the Dale Chihuly glass in I forget which casino, plus a lot of other amazing glass everywhere. Watched our friend's dogs run agility trials, which would have been fun, except we went on the coldest weekend of the year and I was not feeling my touristy best due to what we are guessing was a bit of food poisoning potentially or maybe probably from the restaurant of the famous chef! I can't believe Mario would allow that - I keep thinking it was the turkey sandwich I had for lunch or maybe the too many (though not many by a lot of folks standards) glasses of viciously expensive Italian red wine I had with dinner. I never felt really "sick", just, well, drained, as it were... We took a ride on the famous diagonal elevator in the Luxor, where we were staying. It is really pretty much a non-event, but you can feel the "pull" going sideways instead of down when it starts or stops if you pay attention. oh - what else? I don't know... well, on our way to the airport we sauntered through a few more casinos and saw some live lions. That was a bit of a surprise! There was a gigantic rodeo in town and also trillions of Brit football/boxing fans in town, which, combined with the ballroom folk, made for an interesting montage of people walking by We will go back, but not until our friends get their guest bedroom and swimming pool finished so we can stay deluxe, but cheap!

Sounds like you had a blast!! I've always wanted to go see Vegas-- except that I get a little shell-shocked in Best Buy, so I'm not sure I could handle it!!

Expert Yogi Posts: 5098 Location: Somewhere in the Mountains of Western NC | Hey Tourist, One of the funnest times I ever had with my Mother and Sister, is when we went to Vegas...back in 1992. So much has changed since then I know...but, I did the Hoover Dam thing...it is incredible and I was soo happy to have seen the White Tigers and I had front row seats for David Copperfield's show at Ceaser's Palace?? Is it still there??? Anyway, I'm surprised you didn't mention or try to connect with Fifi on yoga.com. Oh well. I always have said if I ever make out to Vegas I wanted to look her up....maybe go get some acupuncture or something...have a drink or conversation over chai....something,

Expert Yogi Posts: 8442 | Cyndi - I know. I didn't even have time to look for a class or roll out my mat, for that matter. We'll be back some time soon, I'm sure and make time to hang out more. I didn't see any signs of David C., but there is so much going on there, I could have missed it. I forgot one big highlight - we went to Whole Foods! What a store. Now I know what everyone raves about. I got some Fage yogurt with honey. I loved that the honey was separate. Now, this was some amazing yogurt, I have to say, BUT the stuff I get locally that is 3.5% (isn't Fage about 10%?) and organic is very close and certainly has a smaller carbon footprint. Still, it was great to be able to try it. They also had Raincoast Crisps, which are these amazing crackers made in Vancouver. If you see them in your local WF, give them a try. They are not cheap (about $6 a pack here, I don't remember what they cost down there) but soooo good, you will eat all the crumbs.

tourist - 2007-12-11 8:06 PM We also went out to Lake Mead, which is desperately shrinking. I am not sure why they continue to let the city grow when there is clearly a water supply problem. : because the tourists that go there cause a demand for more growth, not sure why you are perplexed by it. More tourists equal more attractions equals more jobs equals more employees equals more houses equals more demands on nature less tourists equals less attractions.................................................................. just thoughts seeker

Expert Yogi Posts: 8442 | I dunno - demand and need are two words often used in justifying growth and I think they are abused. People went to Las Vegas when it was smaller and they probably still would be going if it was the size it was in its heyday (assuming they kept it up, of course...). We went to Stonehenge, which is big, but not Vegas big. It is the same size it was when they built it - maybe smaller - and gajillions of folks were lined up to look at it all the same.
